one month solo in the states... but I cant drive

I'd be so grateful for any recommendations in helping me plan my month in the states!

Im a lone traveller and cant drive so any suggestions for cities or excursions that do not require me to drive that would be fab! I'd love to get a taste of the diversity of landscapes and cultures on offer. i'd also like to fit in yosemite or yellowstone.....

Any suggestions most welcome!!!

For some reason my brain thought Mnt Rushmore, should have read more carefully, but on side note i don't drive either and have found Amtrak a great way to see the US travelling alone and with a small child

I also don't drive, and that limited my US travel for quite some time. However, I just returned from a trip that included Utah, a bit of Idaho, Wyoming (with Grand Teton/Yellowstone) and South Dakota with a tiny tour group from Travel Dream West. It worked really well for me as it's hard to get into places like Yellowstone if you don't drive. They do have the "yellow bus tours" inside Yellowstone, but transport from the train or plane into the park lodgings seems difficult.

Here's my trip report (with photo links) for some ideas; Travel Dream West does a variety of tours that might work for you: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...stward-who.cfm

Well first of all, perhaps you should tailor your trip based on the WEATHER in various regions.

Unfortunately (in a way) your options are soooooooo wide-open that you don't have enough criteria to dictate a choice.

As you have tagged your post with Arizona, California, Montana, and Texas, you should definitely find ways to take in The Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone National Park. You'd likely do these via bus tours from nearby cities. I'm also guessing that Los Angeles/Hollywood and San Francisco would be of prime interest in California.

Montana itself is vast and whatever is there is spread-out over wide areas. So maybe focus most of your Montana experience on the logistics of a Yellowstone bus tour. (note: Yellowstone Park is mostly in Wyoming, but the town of "West Yellowstone" is in Montana)

Before you can get the optimum help from internet users in the U.S. it would be best if YOU yourself selected at least 3 to 5 keen interests.

Beyond that, Amtrak's rail passes and things are very useful for the type of travel you seek. I think you should preference train or even air travel over the bus, BUT in rural areas the bus might be plenty comfortable.

So, firstly, why don't you name perhaps 5 spots that are your highest priorities, AND give us a sense for in what month/season this trip will take place?

don't forget about www.megabus.com

An organized national park tour would seem to me the best way to see those tow places.

Have you seen any of the US yet? Why did you pick those tags? That kind of info will help you get better advice. Where are you flying into?

If you haven't been anywhere yet I'd fly into Boston and spend 3-4 days, then take bus or train to NYC and spend 4 or 5 days. Then fly out west and take an organized tour of some national parks. Where you'd fly into, which parks, etc - so many options so you'd need to do some research to find the one that best suits you but to do that part of the country without a car I think an organized tour would work best. Then fly from there to California - probably the San Francisco area for the last week.

So I would pick three or four general areas (eg Boston/NYC, the southwest or Rocky Mt area, Northern Calif). Within those general areas you can do smaller trips but don't try to cover the whole country.
