Instead of returning to Salt Lake City, you ought to look into flying to San Francisco (or Oakland) from Billings, Montana. You would drive out the Beartooth Highway to Billings. If you can get unlimited miles with a reasonable one-way fee dropoff fee on a car and decent air fare, then it might work.

Actually, instead of flying DC-SLC, just fly to Jackson, Wyoming. Or to Billings (BIL) or Bozeman (BOZ), Montana, or to Cody (COD), Wyoming. When I visited Yellowstone and GTNP, we fly into Jackson (JAC) and returned from BIL. The rental car was reasonable.

As it's 10th anniversary of 9/11, you should add 2 hours at JFK and LAX for TSA screenings, FBI mind probes, CIA polygraph tests, extensive bodily cavity searches, X-ray poisonings from the numerous machines, strip searches, etc.

BTW, stay in NYC too short, in LA too long, go to San Francisco, San Diego, Miami, Orlando.
