One extra day in Sandusky, suggestions on how to spend it?

Hello, Everyone,

I'm planning a short trip to Sandusky with some friends for July 14-15. The primary destination is Cedar Point for one day, and then we have another day to see some other sights in the area. I'm interested in taking a ferry boat to one of the islands in Lake Erie, specifically either Put-In-Bay or Pelee Island, which is actually Canadian.

Would anyone care to comment on this with their own experiences or suggestions? Thanks so much!

Sandi Maier
Hi Sandi-I suggest taking the ferry to Put-In-Bay, you can rent bikes or a golf cart and tour the Island, see Perry's Monument, the Put-In-Bay Historical Museum, (behind the police station) Perry's Cave, Heineman Winery. I would recommend Pascales, Mossbacks or the Cresecent for lunch or dinner. Call 1-800-BUCKEYE for more info.

Hi, Ginny!

What a fast reponse! I have actually called the Ohio Tourism office two days ago and will be receiving some brochures and the like in a couple weeks. I also called the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce and they gave me some direct numbers to a few ferry operators, etc. I will be receiving literature from them as well. I have heard that Put-In-Bay has a "Party" atmosphere, and this sounds great. Are you familiar with the Canadian island at all?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Sandi
There isn't a lot to do on Pelee Island. Put-In-Bay has more touristy things. You might want to check out Kellys Island also. The Island Rocket goes from Sandusky to either PIB or Kellys. If you take the PIB ferry, you have to drive to Port Clinton which is about 30 minutes on a good day, however, they always have Rt. 2 tore up with construction and you can get some pretty long delays. The Miller Ferry on Catawba will allow you to take your car over to the Island, but on the weekend, you need proof of accomodations to take your car over. They are very strict about this.

Web sites:

http://www.put-in-bay.com/
http://www.lake-erie.com/
www.islandrocket.com/
www.jetexpress.com
www.millerferry.com/
www.kelleysisland.com
www.neumanferry.com

Sandi-Forgot to mention party places. On PIB, the Round House, Beer Barrel, home of the World's longest bar, have great entertainment. The Boarwalk has an outdoor deck and serves a mean lobster bisque. On Kelly's, the Casino is the place to be for great bands. Kids under 21 are not allowed in the bars and they do check.

We took a short drive to Seneca Caverns on our last Cedar Point trip and had a great time. You can check them out at
http://www.senecacavernsohio.com/

Thanks for the suggestions, Ginny, MariBeth and Lori. I will definitely look at those websites. And don't worry, we're all over 21. Will have to check out "The World's Longest Bar"!

I would welcome any further opinions.

Sandi

Are these good options for a family with teens or would anyone suggest something else for an extra day or two after Cedar Point?
