One Day On Long Island

In a couple of weeks my husband has a business meeting in Lake Success so I am tagging along and we will go NYC for a few days after the meeting. We are flying in a day early so we will have one day to kill prior to the meeting. We could take the train into the city but we are thinking of renting a car and exploring Long Island. We both enjoy taking a drive and seeing the sights. We also enjoy the beach. I was thinking of driving to the Hamptons but I know it is at the other end of Long Island so I am not sure what kind of drive time we are looking at. We love seafood and will be looking for a good lunch spot that day. I saw some places recommended to DebitNM in her East Hampton post that sound good if we manage to get that far. Also looking for dinner suggestions in the Lake Success area. Nothing fancy and we like all types of ethnic food. Thanks in advance for any help!

The Hamptons are way too far to travel for one day. But Jones Beach is an easy trip from Lake Success.

And they have many concerts by well known people at night.

From where you are the Hamptons will be at least 2 hours each way - more depending on day of the week and traffic. And to get to Montauk - the end of the island is another hour. Also - most of the beaches there are town beaches and you need to be a resident with a sticker to visit them, Parking is very limited and you would need to walk forever if you park you car elsewhere.

If you want to go to a beach agree on Jones Beach - a huge state park with 9 different lots/beaches with different atmospheres. Some just dunes and sand, a major section with a boardwalk and casuale places to eat.

But for good sea food head to Freeport - where there are some fishing boats that actually dock and provide freshly caught fish to the local restaurants.

Lake Success is on the north shore and the ocean beaches are on the south shore. If you want to do some touring rather than beach, Sagamore Hill, Teddy Roosevelt's house and Old Westbury Gardens (with a house you can tour)http://www.oldwestburygardens.org/index.htm would be nice stops from Lake Success. There are also some nice beaches on the north shore. Sands Point and Kings Point Park are not far.

If you want an ocean beach, instead of going to Jones Beach, Long Beach is closer. I'm not sure what the parking situation is there though.

Thanks all! I didn't realize that the beaches in the north were private.

Much closer than the Hamptons, in driving time, would be the North Fork of Long Island, where there are many wineries and seafood restaurants, along with some beautiful scenery and beaches. While you do need a parking sticker for some beaches, there are others that are open to all. For example, you could drive to Greenport and explore that old seaport, and then continue on to Orient Point State Park and go to the beach.

Or stop at a winery en route.

The hamlet of Orient (not to be confused with Orient Point) is a charming New England-looking hamlet that is certainly worth a peek to and from the state park.

Driving time should be under 90 minutes, depending on time of day and traffic conditions.

Lake Success was the temporary home of the UN from 1947-1952, while the headquarters was being built in Manhattan but I do think there is anything to visit.

Adu, Lake Success only because the meeting is there! I am a west coaster and I have only been to New York City once for a few days. I am always excited to see other parts of the US even if it isn't on my bucket list of destinations. I am looking forward to being a tourist in NYC too and I will be wary of the sidewalk etiquette you provided!

NYT you just opened up many memories of Freeport. I grew up there (FHS '51) and spent my teenage summers at Jones Beach.

Spending a day at the beach, lockers and pool at the West Bathhouse, and strolling the boardwalk should provide them an enjoyable day. Then dinner at the Freeport waterfront which has always had excellent sea food restaurants.

If you have a rainy day, consider going to Teddy Roosevelt's home in Oyster Bay.

Do not be wary. Just follow my instructions exactly as perscribed and people will think you are a NY'er. Well at least those from out-of-town.
