One Day in Providence, RI

In mid-October we will have 1 full day (wish it was longer) to spend in Providence, Rhode Island and I'm not sure what are the must see's of the city. We would be interested in shopping (upscale and artsy) and seeing some of the local sites. We also will need a recommendation for dinner. Al Forno is out of the question since it doesn't take reservations. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Rachel

I've lived in the area all my life and for starters eat breakfast at Plaza Grill on the plaza on Federal Hill. Fran makes it the best! Believe me. Then call Cafe Nuovo and reserve a riverside table for dinner. It can't be beat. I'll pay for the dinner if you are not satisfied. Forget Al Forno their attitude stinks and food is only so so, and as many people think, they get far too much press. As far as shopping goes just hit Providence Place mall. It's as upscale as you are going to get. Nordstrom's, Lord & Taylor's, etc.

If it's only a day rent a car and drive 45 min. to Newport. See the grand mansions and have lunch at Cafe Zelda's on Thames St. or The Mooring Rest.

If you can't drive take a trolly tour of the city. Stop in at the State House and view the great dome. Then eat lunch at Union Station Brewery. Alot of eating but hope you have a good time.

Go to Newport and walk around the fort. Dinner at Christie's on the water....best Sea Scallops I have ever had

Thank you for the tips Glen and E! Cafe Nuovo and the Plaza Grill sound great. I found some online reviews and sample menus for both!

Don't miss the Burt Gallery, which is owned by the personable Cathy Burt. It has a great selection of regional art.

There is just one place in Providence for the very BEST eating experience, it is at Al Forno, overlooking the Providence River at sunset. Eat in the upstairs restaurant and ask the waitress about sharing. It is memorable

Thank you for all the input on sites and restaurants to go and check out. Is there a specific area of town were the art galleries and odd little gift stores are located?
