One day in Philadelphia

We (2 adults) have a one day trip to Philly this weekend (1-12-03) and would love some ideas on one or two Must See's, as well as a recommendation for where to find the best Philly cheesesteak. We're staying directly downtown, right near the convention center, and have a car.

Thanks!

I would do the historical sights, and Reading Terminal Market. Unfortunately, I just noticed you will be there on Sunday, when it's closed.

you could go to independence hall and there is a visitors center there with all kinds of places/info you could go...elfreths alley which is oldest street in us...you can take a carriage ride thru the city and the people who ride you around are very knowledgeable...just bundle up...supposed to be really cold! also..wear green to support the eagles!! have fun!

Depending on what you're into, I would recommend the Phila. Museum of Art, and take a trolley tour of the city. For cheesesteak head to south Philly. You'll find die hard fans of both Pat's and Geno's (across the street from each other), however John's Roast Pork was recently picked by the Inquirer magazine as the best cheesesteak in the area.

If you have a good hotel parking deal, leave your car. There is a purple, city-run for tourists bus called "Phlash" (like Philadelphia, get it?) that makes a loop of historic and museum sites for a one-time price (I think it's $1.25) - you can get off and on. I second the Art Museum. They also have a good restaurant there or go to the neighborhood near there- Fairmount- Rose Tattoo; Flower Shop cafe;

I just read in today's paper that Reading Terminal Market WILL be open this Sunday - a special thing - you absolutely should go in! It's right across the street from the Convtc Center- and it's one of Phila's best hidden gems - perfect for lunch (and souvenirs)

We go to Philly all the time (live twenty minutes away). South Street is worth a trip. We love Jim's Cheesesteaks on South Street. There is also a Fat Tuesdays and lots of unique little stores.
South Philly - Our favorite Italian Restaurants is Dante and Luigi's on 10th and Catherine Street. We also like Pat's Cheesesteaks. Philadelphia Magazine recently did an article on Cheesesteaks in Philly.
The Art Museum is worth a trip. They have a rather big exhibit going on now. I am not sure what, but I saw something about it in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The car show is at the convention center this weekend. You can walk out and across the street right into Reading Terminal Market. They have a good cheesesteak stand inside. (Forgot the name) Usually not open on Sunday, but someone said they were this Sunday.
The shops at the Bellevue are nice. The Mutter Museum is bizarre but worth a trip. The Museum of Archeology and Anthropology is also worth seeing. (not sure if either is open on sunday). Edgar Allen Poe's house in on Spring Garden Street. I would also suggest the Liberty Bell and the United States Mint. They don't make paper money only coins. But, it is neat to see.
If you want more info..e-mail.

To correct the last poster, the Franklin Mint isn't open to the public at this time.

Wow, what great suggestions! It looks like we need a week, rather than a short weekend!

My husband is going to the game on Saturday evening so we'll be wearing green. My brother (who IS from Atlanta) will be staying home.
