One day in NY city

We will be staying at JFK, and have Saturday, November 3rd to visit the city before our flight at 9 pm. What should we do in the city? Thanks for your help.

How do you propose to get into the City A taxi will cost at least $40 each way.
Airport bus is around $13 a person. .YOu could do it by train (cost #1.50 a person) but allow anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours for each way. With a 9pm flight it would be wise to head back to the airport by 5 pm the latest. Assuming you start the day at 9am you would have around 7 hours in the city. IN this time frame you could explore the Times Square, 5th Avenue, Central Park. You might even consider taking one of the double decker hop on hop off bus tours.

I and my two small children faced the same issue. We hired a town car (Millenium Limo-I would recommend them)and they drove us around town for the day. Central Park-carousel and carriage ride, Upper West Side-where I lived when I was in NYC, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, lower Manhattan-last time I saw the WTC. This works well because you don't have to have a set plan and can hit the high spots even though one day is not close to enough time, of course. The Circle Line boat tour around Manhattan is also great.

I think the touring suggestions are good, the bus or the boatride, you could decide based on weather & visibility.

If you want to fine-tune more, maybe you'd like to post interests:

museums
shopping
dining
Chinatown
parks
relating to the 9/11 events in some way
strolling in interesting neighborhoods
seeing a show

If you state priorities, I'd find it easier to make suggestions. Do you want to hang around or zip around, for example?
Is this your only first and only trip to NYC? If so, the ideas above are OK, but understand you may feeled rushed.
Would you consider staying in Queens, where the airport is? There are art museums, a science center for kids, a great American Museum of the Moving Image (TV and film), small botanical gardens, interesting neighborhoods of many ethnicities esp Indian and Chinese and Korean. If any of thoise interest you. let us know and we'll get you more details. It will save you some travel time at both ends, and will let you see some of the real NY. We hope you'll come again when you have more time for all the tourist stuff, too!
