One day in Manhattan--what would you do?

Of course I have a selfish reason for asking. We're going to Long Island in June for a family wedding and will only take a train into the city for one day (a Saturday).

We've been to NYC a number of times before, but no one thing leaps out at me as the best way to spend the day. Maybe a show, maybe the Met Museum...what would you do?

First of all I would see if there is anything on at a particular museum that I really want to see, because that won't be there on your next visit.

Since we know nothing about your interests other than you might like a show or a museum.....how about a show or a museum.....or both?

You ask what would I do. I'd go to a show, or since it's a Saturday, probably two shows!

But what difference does it make what I'd do -- you're not paying my way are you? The important thing is what YOU enjoy. Apparently either a show or museum.

What do you enjoy most and least in the city - that will help us make recos.

I would take a walk following this approximate route: Central Park, Mid-Town, Times Square, Pennsylvania Station area, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Tribeca, Little Italy, Chinatown, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, the Battery. Along the way I would pop into shops and galleries and picnic on food from street carts, bakeries, and enthic groceries.

The new dinosaur exhibit that opened last saturday at the Museum of Natural History sounds interesting (can't remember how long it's staying though). I'd probably fit that in, if it were me.

First, definitely visit the nearly-new Museum of Sex (Fifth Avenue @27th Street). The exhibitions are great, and not just porn -- truly historical, social, and academic in nature. Then take a nice stroll through Madison Square Park, a block away, all the way down the Lower Fifth shopping to Union Square. It's a great way to spend the afternoon.

I'm with Patrick--a show or two.

Thanks for the responses. I like to know what other people value in a destination.

Not that that necessarily helps me make less eccentric choices. If I'm in a chess-playing mood on that Saturday, I'm as likely as not to want to spend the day at a little place in Greenwich Village playing chess, wasting a beautiful day and all of Manhattan outside. (My easy-going DH usually indulges even my oddest whims.)

Anyway, thanks for sharing your perspectives!
