on/off bus New York
from what I have read the Brooklyn loup of this tour is not an on/off but there is a stop right at the Brooklyn Bridge to step off to take a picture...Has anyone just stepped off and left the tour?...We would like to walk the bridge and thought this would be an easy way to get to the other side to walk back to Manhattan.

Taking the subway to Brooklyn to walk back would be significantly cheaper.

We are taking the subway to some of the things we are seeing but wanted to do the on/off bus just to see the city...cost isn't an issue..we will see the highlights with the bus and get a lay of the land and then do some adventuring on our own as well.

The buses are fine, if expensive, if you have a lot of time here and do offer a way to get a one-day overview of major tourist sights. The problem comes when you get off. They don't run nearly often enough in the summer to accommodate the hoards of visitors and are, therefore, a particularly bad deal in my opinion. If you want to get an overview of NYC, ride a city bus for a fraction of the cost or take a walking tour.
But especially for Brooklyn, you'll be able to get where you need to go with much less hassle and wasted time on the subway. It's not a matter of money. The hop-on buses are a HUGE time-waster. That's my major objection. |
Both HOHO buses cover a VERY limited part of Brooklyn and technically you can't leave the bus.
Right now there is work being done on the side of the Brooklyn Bridge closest to Brooklyn. Since I knew I would have 2 groups that would each be walking the Bridge, I did the whole walk a couple of weeks ago and the part where the Bridge is covered is useless and the paths are narrowed. I made the "executive" decision to start our walks from the Manhattan side, go to the covers and walk back. My 10 seniors in the first group thanked me profusely for the decision. We got to see a school group emerging from the covers. They did not look happy. Sat evening I will be on the Bridge with 18 seniors and their grandchildren and again we are starting and returning from the Manhattan side. Brooklyn is huge. Pick your neighborhoods and go exploring. http://thestarryeye.typepad.com/expl...op-of-the-bus/ |
SueNYC doesn't make it clear but she is a guide on the Grayline hoho buses. Listent to what she's saying. ;)

Really just wanted to take the bus across the bridge have some pizza and walk back but since the bridge has covers we may do just what Sue said and walk to the covers and walk back and eat our pizza in Manhattan.

The limelight market on 26th st has a branch of Grimaldis I think. Went in briefly to look around when I was in the neighborhood but I didn't stay long.

Thank you Sue...Have already planned that before we head to Macys for my mother of the groom dress...I hear they have a whole floor of just dresses...if I can't find it there I may be in trouble...
