Oh, tragically this 13 year old boy died when he got caught in 3 feet of water when a drain sucked him in and he could not get out. His parents were right there... the suction is that strong!
This has happened elsewhere in Cancun recently, too.
How tragic.

Before John Edwards was senator from North Carolina, he was a personal injury attorney. He 'won' the largest settlement in the state of NC (around $30 million) for a little girl who had her guts sucked out through a pool drain. She survived, but will have medical needs for the rest of her life.
This happened at a public pool in Wake County (Raleigh). And it might have been the baby pool (don't remember)
New pool construction in NC (I think just public pools) require 2 drains.

These stories are heartbreaking. I think all public whirlpool/jacuzzis must now have an emergency shut-off valve, after another tragedy in which a NJ high school girl drowned at her graduation party, when her hair got caught in the jets and there was no shut-off system located.
To add to the travel-relatedness, it's something I always check now when we're at a hotel hot-tub.

Yes, they were talking about the fact that this safety regulation was only in the US and everyone should be aware.
The boy was 13... a good swimmer.
Most parents are not watching a 13 year old too closely at a resort pool!

An 8-year-old American boy died in 2003 at the Grand Xcaret resort in Playa del Carmen when he was sucked into an uncovered 12-inch pool drain pipe. He was missing for 20 hours.
Awful. Parents, please check out the pool before your kids swim!
