On 77 N towards Charlotte HELP with hotel

Hi All,

I am on 77 N headed towards Charlotte NC and looking for a safe area for a hotel in about $100 price range. Any suggestions?

Cassandra Jun 25th, 2008 04:39 PM

A quick search via Travelocity yielded several possibilities in the vicinity of the airport and along 77 -- 3 LaQuintas among others (Airport N., Airport S. and one other).

Their 800 number is 1-800-753-3757

Thanks! Is the area safe? I am not familiar with the city at all. I didn't know if there were areas to avoid.

Thanks for your help!

The area around the airport is sterile for the most part, as far as I know. Sorry I don't know Charlotte better, but have stayed out by the airport and -- like most airport "aprons" -- my memory is that it's just uninteresting and sparse.

Hint, if you see the motel is next to a "Girls" supper club, keep going! (;-) kidding, sort of)

Ask for an upper room with an inside corridor and you should be fine.

You might prefer the LaQuinta Airport North on Sloan Dr. (off I-85 -- their directions: "Take 85 north to exit 33 go left towards Queen City Blvd and make a left Hotel on your left."

Cassandra Jun 25th, 2008 04:57 PM

Let me know where you end up.

JennyJJJ Jun 25th, 2008 05:00 PM

Girls Supper Club? OMG are you serious? ROFL! I would die! LOL
I will check out the LaQuinta, I've never stayed at one but I have seen them before.

Thanks again for your help. This is exactly why I asked...I don't want any "supper club" surprises! LOL
Thanks!

PS I'll let you know! Thanks

I'm at the LaQuinta Airport North! No Supper Clubs around here :) Thanks again. You were a big help!:)

Just found this thread - kudos to Cassandra. Better than AAA. With Fodorites and a GPS, you can't go wrong! At least on the USA board............

I'm sure some local Charlottians (Charlotte-ites?) (Charlotters?) could have pointed JennyJJJ to some other "safe" places -- most places are -- but not on the spur of the moment if they aren't on line.

Charlotteans (please forgive the spelling). Intrested to see where she ended up. There is no place anywhere near the Airport I would even consider. She likely should have stayed south of town (near Carowinds), Uptown. Or well north of town if she wanted to stay near I-77.

I don't know Charlotte terrifically well but have been there on three different occasions, including in staying in areas near the airport. I very much enjoy the downtown, the Mint, etc., although - as I said - it seemed to me that the airport area was largely uninviting but convenient to interstates. I clearly need to go to Charlotte again and learn the areas better for the next time, which is fine with me.

Explanation: I figured JennyJJJ was alone in her car, using her phone to access fodors.com, and needed a quick answer. So I pulled up travelocity just because it maps available rooms pretty handily. In the $100 range, with availability for that night, the LaQuintas were the closest to I77 I found. Just for the heckuvit, I also used mapsgoogle's "street view" to scope out the immediate neighborhoods, and based on that, the North vs. South "La Quinta Airport" looked moderately more congenial.

If my result wasn't perfect, at least I got her somewhere more or less in her price range, fairly quickly. If she were my sister or daughter, I'd be glad she "landed safely."

(and thanks, jj495)

Cassandra, don't get me wrong, I'm glad you could help. It is unfortunate that the CLT Airport lies in such an unfortunate area. The way I travel to get there is out Wilkinson Blvd., & although efforts are being made nearer town, that area is flat scary. I was only mentioning the other areas as the Airport itself is near I-85 not I-77 & I have no idea where the LaQuintas may be located. I think there may be one right off of 77 near the big Farmers Market, but I could be mistaken.

Cassandra Jun 29th, 2008 08:23 AM

I don't know where the Farmer's Market is, but where Jenny stayed was north just off I-85 at the exit for (but away from) Billy Graham Pkwy, south of Tuskegee. If this was an unsavory area, please don't tell Jenny! :-)(I did the best I could).

I'll just be quiet...shhhhh
