Omni or Andrews in SF??
I have it narrowed down to the Omni or the Andrews Hotel. The Omni looks beautiful and new, but I don't know how convenient the Financial District is compared to Union Square. We will have a car, but would rather not have to take it out of the parking lot. Similar price at both... suggsetions??

I would definately recommend Andrews Hotel. We stayed there 2 years ago and the hotel is in a perfect location just a block or two away from Union Square. The hotel itself is aboutique style with rooms that are on the small side but very pretty and comfortable. A great breakfast is included in the price and it is conveniently served in the hall outside your room so you can help yourself to whatever you like and just eat in your room. Next door to the hotel is a very good Italian restaurant where the guests receive a glass of complimentary wine in the early evenings. We never ate in the restaurants but I've heard rave reviews about it. The staff at the hotel is very helpful and they have put together great information packs for tourists depending on your taste in food, sights, music, art etc. We would definately stay at the Andrews again when we visit next. The place used to be a real find then but it seems to have become very popular in the last year so maybe prices have gone up now?

Andrews..go to www.andrewshotel.com

It is a small intimate/boutique hotel as Hannah says and the Fino Restaurant is quite popular and there is a special fixed price menu for hotel guests.. There is a garage down the street, but we rarely used our car..taxi cabs are very reasonable. Oh yes, they have been written up in a few travel magazines and now the rest of the world knows about the Andrews, ony 40 or 44 rooms and now very popular.

Just got back from SF and the Omni is beautiful. Didn't stay there as I didn't know it was open. Financial District isn't bustling at night but the hotel's on California so it's pretty easy to get to. If the price is similar, the Omni is far nicer than the Andrews (also nice, IMHO).

It's split down the middle- 2 for the Omni and 2 for the Andrews! I need a tie-breaker. What about the location of the Omni? Is it safe to walk around at night? And is it within walking distance of Chinatown or North beach?

Thanks for the feedback.

Deb, you have had several responses to your question. You obviously have trouble making decsions.

xxx

Andrews Hotel is decent, not great. Quaint, clean, the free breakfast is nothing special. Worth the $120/night we paid, but not much more than that. Lots of bums on the street at night. Convenient to the Union Square Shopping.

Deb, there is no area in SF which would be safe for walking at night. I work 1 block off Omni, great area for using public transport. Views will depend on the room I guess. Much less panhandlers in this area compare to Union Square.

I certainly feel safe walking with another person at night in most areas of SF. You need to keep your wits about you and realize you're in a city, not your own backyard. The area around the Omni will be very quiet after business hours, the area around the Andrews will have many more tourists, but it's true, it will have many more homeless--tourists seem to attract the panhandlers--does that surprise you? Either place should be OK to walk if you're aware of surroundings. You can take the California St. cable car from the Omni to Grant Street to get to Chinatown easily. From Chinatown it's a downhill walk on Grant to Columbus into North Beach.
