Olde Stone House Inn Saratoga Springs review

Unfortunately I don't often remember to write reviews after a stay, but in this case I have to make an effort for those interested in staying at the Old Stone House Inn just outside Saratoga Springs NY.

I am one who does a vast amount of research on Fodors, Trip Advisor and wherever else I can glean information about an establishment before making reservations. So you can imagine my apprehension when I could not find a single review about the Olde Stone House Inn in Round Lake NY, just outside of Saratoga Springs. During horse racing season, late July and August, there are few rooms available in and around historic Saratoga Springs. On short notice we decided July 23rd would be the only time we could visit this year and our options as you would expect for lodging were limited for our group of six. Three weeks prior to our arrival I scanned the internet for available reservations with little luck. I still don't remember how I stumbled upon this place, probably through a link on the Chamber of Commerce website. When I asked why there were no reviews to be found, I was assured by Mary, one of the owners that they were a reputable B&B that had been in business for almost 20 years. So once again I was puzzled, if they had been in business that long, why then were there no reviews good or bad to be found anywhere. I crossed my fingers, made the reservations and said to the others we are either very lucky or making a big mistake.

When we arrived and pulled up to the charming cobblestone home built in the 1820’s we were welcomed by Walter and Mary Zielnicki, two of the friendliest and most hospitable hosts we have come to meet over the years of staying at B&B’s. The home is very attractive, comfortable, and relaxing. The décor nicely done with each room displaying well-appointed beautiful antiques. One might think you were staying at a B&B right out of a travel magazine highlighting some of the best B&B's to stay at. The beds were very comfortable and the entire home exceptionally clean. Each unique bedroom was a little different from the next. A common room on the second floor offered a tv, refrigerator and snacks.

Sunday morning we all got up earlier than breakfast was to be served so we elected to have coffee out on the deck. We could hear and smell the delicious breakfast being prepared in the kitchen which was served in the elegant dining room. After breakfast Water & Mary joined us for coffee and some great conversations about the area and their experiences as B&B hosts. Their warm hospitality is just what you come to expect at a B&B and we were so fortunate to have stumbled on this really hidden gem. We hope to return and stay more than just the one night next time. If you are considering a stay here and looking for reviews, trust me you probably won't come across any and that was why I felt compelled to write this and will try and do the same on Trip Advisor.

Nice review - thanks. I usually stay in one of the chain hotels at Exit 9 (Clifton Park), Exit 12 (Malta), or downtown SS but prices and availability now through August is limited.

Any dinner recommendations in the area? (near but outside SS)

We had lunch at Mrs. London's on Broadway in downtown Saratoga and dinner at the race track. Sorry I don't have any recommendations. You will see quite a few on Trip Advisor.

Also, the price of the rooms at The Olde Stone House were less than many of the hotels I was looking at. Add that to the wonderful breakfast we had makes me think what a good deal this was.

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Brick House south of Sharon Springs. Not the same? It was a good place also. Visited Cooperstown and area but not Sarasota Springs.

J62--I go up to Saratoga fairly often. We always go to The Local to eat. Its very casual, good food, specialty beers and is cheap. It is in SS, but not downtown.

Where outside of Saratoga are you looking for places to ear? Just not on Broadway or more like Ballston Spa or some other nearby area? I am very familiar with the area as I used to live there and my parents still do, so I'm happy to make recommendations. Price range? Type food?

Anywhere in the area - BS, Clifton Park, Stillwater, Malta, etc. Any price range, any food. Quality is more important. Looking for options for my frequent visits to the area.

During racing season anything downtown (Broadway or side streets) is hard to get in to without a reservation and/or a wait.

Happy to hear reco's for downtown SS as well for after Labor day.

Some of these may be familiar to you, but I will give you a short list, then think of more later, I am sure.

1. Olde Bryan Inn and Longfellows are owned by the same person and ALWAYS reliable. They are in Saratoga - OBI, right off Broadway. Nice atmospheres and good food.
2. Wishing Well - old Saratoga standby - not on Broadway - wonderful place.
3. Chianti's and Forno - same ownership - one is on Broadway and one right off. Again, nice environment and good food.
4. Augie's - Ballston Spa - total family style Italian - WONDERFUL food and you don't go away hungry. The tiramisu is unbelievable.
5. Max Londons - on Broadway. Owned by the son of Mrs. London'. I am certain you've been there!
6. Prime at Saratoga National - out exit 14 toward the lake.
7. Ravenous - a really yummy crepe place on Phila St. Fantastic!
8. Roma's - an Italian deli on Washington. For take out. Awesome sandwiches etc.
9. Gotchya's - Italian on Beekman St - sort of the artsy area - wonderful food!
10. Mama Mias - Ballston Ave. At the end of the strip mall with the big Price Chopper on the end. Don't let appearances deceive you. The pizza is top notch!
11. Beekman Street Bistro - Beekman Street. Italian with a "farm to table" philosophy. Very fresh food.
12. PJs Barbecue - off exit 13 as you head into town. I'm a Texas girl, and it's about as close as I think it comes around here to good old fashioned barbecue. They are only open in the summer, but beginning in 2012 will be year round.
13. Whistling Kettle - BS - if you have any desire to go to a great little tea lounge - tea and related foods - it's worth a visit.

I am sure I can come up with more! And sorry my brain is blanking on some of the "outer" areas, but I will keep my thinking cap on!
