"Old Town" Alexandria - Washington D.C.
 

I've read alot of good postings regarding Old Town Alexandria. Is the Hampton Inn on Leesburg Pike, Alexandria in what you consider "old town?"

Any comments regarding this Hampton Inn would be nice as well. Thanks.

Alexandria is a large area, and the Hampton Inn on Leesburg Pike is not in the "Old Town", but about 4 miles west of it. There are two other HIs that are.

Outside of Old Town, Alexandria is a vast suburb, and that section of Leesburg Pike isn't anywhere near Old Town. I haven't stayed at that HI, however, so can't comment on it specifically. Must you stay there?

Thanks Rkkwan - Is the Hampton Inn on Leesbury a safe area and okay to walk the four miles to the metro and "old town" area?

Try the Hampton Inn on King Street, or the Embassy Suites. You might go to www.tripadvisor.com

I love Alexandria, and have been there at least 50 times. My aunt and uncle used to live there. It is wonderful.

Definitly stay in "old town". Then you will not have to worry about driving and such. It is a great place.

I've stayed at this HI and it's exactly what you'd expect from this chain. I'd certainly stay there again.

Leesburg Pike is also Route 7 which is also King Street, the main drag through Old Town. So if you take a left out the HI parking lot, you'll be in Old Town in anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. It's a congested road even durng non rush. There 's lot's of big box shopping and restaurants nearby.

The area is very safe to stay in but you wouldn't want to walk from there into Old Town. Way to commercial and congested.

There's probably decent bus service. Check http://rideguide.wmata.com and you can enter start & destination & what time & it will usually give you a couple of variations on your trip. I too love Old Town -- worked for a week at the King St Holiday Inn when it was new about 30 yr ago.

I am a big fan of both Old Town Alexandria and the Hampton Inn on King St. located in Old Town. This Hampton Inn has been fairly recently renovated and is in great condition. The staff are very courteous and friendly - a surprise as the Inn is very reasonably priced for the area. It is a block from the metro (as are Embassy Suites & Hilton). By metro you are about twenty minutes from most DC attractions - you really don't want to drive in DC, metro is the way to go. You are minutes from nice restaurants, the area is charming and as safe as you'll find in a city. The Inn is about a mile walk from the main Old Town attractions - it is a pleasant walk, but if you don't like walking there is a shuttle bus that takes you there. The Hampton Inn on King Street was not recently renovated, it was recently built.

There is no way I would stay on Leesburg Pike/Route 7. Traffic nightmare. Stay in OT.

I'd take the Hampton Inn at the top of King Street anyday, but I think this poster doesn't have that option. On another post he/she said they'd be in town next week and was finding everywhere booked or OTT expensive.

Alexandria has a free DASH bus running from the King Street Metro station down into the heart of Old Town. This is going to be a busy weekend, with decent weather and Cherry Blossoms at peak in DC. I don't know anything about the Hampton Inn but there is the Best Western Old Colony Inn and Holiday Inn at the north end of Old Town. You might try one of those hotels as well.

I don't know if DJCV is still checking in on this thread, but since I have to be in Alexadria for overnight business next Friday, I'll add the following:

Stick it out one night at the Hampton Inn on Leesburg Pike and move the following 2 nights to a spot with easier access to metro. Things open up more on Friday the 15th. Hotels are still busy but you shouldn't have a problem getting a room somewhere in Old Town, Rosslyn, Crystal City for under $200.

I even checked the Embassy Suites Dupont Circle and they've got rooms free next weekend in the $200 to $250 range.

You can get hotels in OT on priceline.
