Old Faithful Inn - room preferences
 

Are there rooms with better views than others at the Old Faithful Inn? Planning a trip there next summer & this inn looks so inviting. Thanks.

I stayed in a room with OF just yards outside my window (ground floor room). I woke up in the middle of the night hearing "something". It wasn't a train. It wasn't a TV. It wasn't until I was completely awake that I realized it was OF. I just grinned.

Do know that EVERYONE is going to request a room with an OF view. I booked VERY early and went the last weekend the park was open (October) and paid the top price for the room. If you are going in the summer, request an OF view room and hope for the best.

The Inn has 2 wings - east wing and west wing. Each wing has 2 sides - east side and west side. The east-wing rooms are the niciest. The east side of the east wing looks out on old faithful. The rooms in the west wing are not as nice, unless they have remodled them since last summer. Ask when you book. Also, when you check in, ask for an east wing east side room even if you didn't book one -there are always cancellations. Also, the inn can get very hot and the east wing east side rooms are the coolest. The east wing west side rooms are hot.We also like staying at Canyon at the newer lodges there. Ask for a backside room.

Oh forgot to tell you, there are several sitting areas that all have great views of old faithful.

We had a nice room with a great view of Old Faithful, but we also woke up every hour when we heard that "something", too. Still worth it to be staying at the Inn and have the view. Now I know I would have taken something to help me sleep. The kids slept right through it.

Are the east side, east wing rooms that have an OF view more expensive? Seems I read somewhere on here that the better the view, the more expensive the room. And the poster said something about trees in the way so why pay more. Also, seems like they said the east wing, west side rooms are slightly cheaper because you are in the best rooms, but no OF view. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks!

I was there in October, and the great room wasn't too bad. $$$ wise

If I were going back, well... I think this is one place I would splurge for a room with a view.

The decor of the room was delightful and the little bear soaps put smiles on our faces! :-)

BTW, a free "show" from our window - a visitor got just a little too close to an elk and in in a second's time, it charged. Visitors feet spun in circles like a character in a cartoon - his feet came out from under him on the faux wood decking (recycled plastic) and he landed on his bum! It was funny once we realized he was safe!

It was wonderful being able to sit/relax and watch the eruptions just outside the window. Definitely worth the splurge to me - and I LOVED the lobby of the lodge!

The east wing and the view rooms are more $$. The remodled rooms are worth it. I don't like the un-remodled rooms. Ask if there is any construction going on that will disturb you. (Happens a lot.) We love the rooms that face Old Faithful, but if you don't get one, not to worry - the sitting areas that face OF are nice and numerous. (one on every floor plus a big one off the lobby.) The Snow Lodge has new remodled rooms similar to the OF Inn now, but it doesn't have the charm of the Inn. That said, I would take a new room at Snow Lodge over an old un-remodled room at OF Inn - and just walk to the Inn for nighttime activities.

The Old Faithful Inn IS inviting. It's spectacular. Not knowing the east/west room thing, and being told rooms didn't have a view of OF, I just booked 2 rooms. Our room was larger than our kids' room, and brighter. We were, I guess, not on the Old Faithful side, but we saw plenty of geyser basins right from our room. The thing is, you don't spend much time in your room.The lobby is wonderful, as are the sitting areas on each balcony. The outside roof/deck area, huge, was where we spent a lot of time when not hiking. I don't think it matters. The inn is an experience, you're not there for the room, and after 2 nights in each of 4 locations throughout YNP and GTNP, my kids both said OF Inn was their favorite. I spent a lot of my time planning where to stay, checking websites and boards, and we loved every minute of our trip and each location we stayed in.

Shucks, Speedbuggy, you are too kind. BUT, you did encourage me to write a report. So, I did. I didn't post any pictures,however, and between my daughter and DH, we have easily 1000 of them. Yes, I printed BayouGal's list, as well as another thread about float trips. I used it a lot. Thanks, BayouGal. Feel free to use this thread, or my report, to ask specific questions.
