I'll be meeting up with some family members in Oklahoma City for one night in April. I'll have my 8 year old daughter with me. I'm interested in the National Cowboy & Heritage Museum - unless you Fodorites have other ideas of a way to spend a few hours in OKC on a Sunday morning. Also, is Bricktown near the museum? Bricktown looks like a good choice for Saturday night dinner and a hotel. Bonus points for anyone who can tell me the priceline area for Bricktown.

The Museum is wonderful! Bricktown is not right near the museum. It is closer to the Memorial. Nothing is very far apart in that area.

I don't know what things are open on a Sunday morning. However, one of the things that we felt compelled to visit (and it may be over the head of an 8 yr old) was the site of the Federal building bombing. The museum is very well done, and the grounds are a silent monument to those killed, with a reflecting pool and oversize, empty chairs, one for each victim, on a grassy knoll near the pool.

On a lighter note, there is a great restaurant (The Stockyard, I think), in the stockyard/cowboy area. Several stores that cater to cowboy-type attire, boots, etc. Might be fun to poke around there. Also, downtown area has a botanical garden. Every year there is a ladybug release. You might check to see if that is going on while there. This seems like a fun thing for the 8 yr old.

I just checked biddingfortravel because I could not remember what area I had stayed in, but I remembered that it was about two blocks from Bricktown. It
turns out that I bid on the Downtown Oklahoma City area. The price was great. Check out biddingfortravel before you bid. Also, if you get a Sheraton or Westin, get a starwood card (they are free on the starwood website).
It sometimes gets you a better room.

I would also recommend the OKC Bombing Memorial. It is very moving, and the museum has been designed to be accessible to children.

The stockyard area is kind of neat, but it is not an area I would recommend you go after dark by yourselves - during the day should be fine, though. I think the restaurant babs001 is thinking of is Cattleman's - I have eaten there and they have great food and a fun environment.

Enjoy your visit! The Zoo and Omniplex are about two blocks from the Cowboy Museum. Bricktown is wonderful at night where you can take a horse drawn carriage ride or a boat ride on the river.

beckers: You are right - the restaurant that I was trying to remember is the Cattleman's. It's a very popular place and the food is great.

When in April will you be there? The Festival of the Arts is during the 3rd week of April and is located next to the Myriad (botanical) Gardens. Lots of artwork, food, music and a large area geared for kids. Close to the Bricktown and Memorial, also. Don't miss it if you're in town then.

Keysmom, the western heritage museum is a terrific way to spend Sunday morning. For a change of pace for brunch, try the Dim Sum at Grand House on Classen just north of NW 23rd.
