Okc,Ok to Taos,NM

I searched online about the best way to travel from okc to Taos and it showed to exit off I40 before getting out of Oklahoma taking 2 lane highways the rest of the way, I'm wondering why not stay on I40 all the way to NM then travel north to Taos, has anyone have experience about this. Thanks for any suggestions

Most map search sites have an "options" page.

Yours may have been set to " avoid highways" or "shortest route."

Rerun the search using "fastest route" and see what you get.

Agree with Ackislander - what online search are you using? Try MapQuest.

Using that, it returns 2 routes both approximately the same duration. The most obvious is I-40, getting off exit 256 well into New Mexico. Here is a link: http://mapq.st/1XIWF6u

Those are slow highways that it has chosen. We've always taken I-40 to Clines Corners and north from there. It's much faster than the two-lane highways we had in the panhandle of Texas and part of NM.

It would be a bit longer time-wise but you could turn at Las Vegas, NM and head up 84 turning into 518 through the mountains in the back way to Taos. It would be more scenic but definitely slower than taking 285 to 68 into Taos.

Of course, this is assuming you are driving during the summer and not winter weather.

Thank you for your wisdom this is first time for me to be using a site like this, it did show I40 most of the way with two choices going north of I 40 once we get into NM. We have got a plan now thanks for your replies

Welcome! Come back with more questions if you have them. We love helping others visiting our favorite places. :-)

Just an added note that I wouldn't want to make the tail-end of the drive into Taos at dark if you are taking the back way in by HWY 518 as it's a winding, dark road at night. Gorgeous during the day!
HWY 68 has enough traffic to help at darkness but it also isn't well lit until you get close to Taos. And, driving at dark you would miss the incredible view of the Royal Gorge.

Good to know thanks. We will be leaving early and they say about a 9 hour trip so we should be okay, the Royal Gorge is beautiful we will have to see it
