Have we stopped to notice that our celebrity list of real jerks includes some very popular figures? If they are so bad that we would shun them on a personal level, yet support their luxurious life style by buying what they sell or watching their shows, what does that say about us? I must admit that I caught myself watching the tennis matches at Wimbledon and J. P. McEnroe was the analyst. I suddenly remembered my post saying I would not want to be around him, but I did not quit watching.
His comments served mainly to reinforce my notion that he is a supercilious snob of the first order of egregiousness with no redeeming features that I can detect.
I have had the misfortune to encounter a few celebrities in my life. Most of them are royal jerks. But I must admit that my one encounter with David Brinkley was pleasant. My Dad was a huge fan of David's; he assiduously watched the NBC nightly news
with David Brinkley and Chet Huntley.
So when I was living in Dc I went with him over to the NBC station on Nebraska Avenue to watch the newscast in the studio. For reasons I don't recall, there were two telecasts. Between "takes" Mr. Brinkley came out to talk to us. He was most gracious and thanked us for being interested enough to come and watch the show. I have been a loyal Brinkley fan ever since. The well known Brinkley acerbic comments were in evidence during rehersal, but I thought they were well directed. That kind of stuff does not bother me. To us, as guests of little pedigree, he was the epitome of charm, style and grace.

Bob, you make good points about McEnroe, but let's face it. He is the best "color" person working tennis. By the time you've watched a five-hour men's match, few people other than McEnroe can hold your attention. Plus, there is always the chance he'll say something outrageous, which he does every few hours. Just this week, during his interview with Bjorn Borg, he said his famous loss to Borg at Wimbledon actually made him more popular because "the English love losers." How's that for tact? It's like watching someone juggle nitroglycerin, and I want to be watching when it finally blows up in his face.

Speaking of obnoxious phonies of the first order, I nominate Al Gore.

Imagine what a BORING plane flight it would be with him trying to explain the way of the world without his handlers/ghost writers or Daddy around to tell him what he thinks that day?

Okay, okay, so it's an election year and for all you GOP elefunks with memories back to 1973 think it's gonna be a anti-Clinton-Gore free-for-all this year -- you're starting too early. It's gonna get boring. Why do you think the public is so dumb that they think the Democrats were the first to have amoral presidents and dirty-tricks campaign managers? You're in a very brittle glass house, so watch where the stones go.

Sure I'm no Republican, and sure I'm totally cheesed off at the current horny idiot in the White House for selling the future of the Supreme Court and the Congress down the river for a few jollies. But don't think for a second that the GOP can't match and easily exceed the Dems for campaign funding abuses. The Potomac is a filthy, filthy river.

As for traveling companions, why would anyone propose travelling with ANY political office holder at this point?
