OK, if we get Red Sox tickets, where to stay in Boston?
 

If we do score some tickets, we would go probably sometime in August. Where should we stay? We would be doing usual sights. Maybe a few days downtown. Then a few days out...Cape Cod maybe. Or Martha's Vinyard. Any ideas??? We have done the Concord trip already, and Salem. Loved it.

Any help here???

not sure what the question is...do you want to stay in boston? or somewhere outside the city...? are you looking for a hotel reccomendation or an area?

No matter where you stay within the city of Boston, you can easily get to Fenway Park via the "T" (subway) or taxi.

The best bet is to "score" your Redsox tickets first.

You haven't mentioned the legnth of you trip.

Visting Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard during July can be a positive nightmare without lots of pre-planning.

Thanks. Don't mean to be so vague. The key is getting the tickets and that would have to be during our small window of travel time this summer between kids sports times. So, here is the question. IF say, we should score the tickets to Fenway during our window of opportunity to travel on family vacation, that would put us in Boston for our week of time. Where would be a nice place to stay for a few days in Boston? Then we would want to travel to another Mass place for another three days, out of the city. Martha's Vinyard could be too difficult. Maybe the Cape? Or upstate, up the coast? Not sure. Maybe it is just too early to plan. Thanks for trying.

it's never too early to plan....ok, sox tickets are not that hard to get during the summer....(unless it's during a series with the yankees or late in the season)....while there aren't too many tickets available on the red sox website, there will be plenty of people selling tickets the day of the game....don't feel intimidated about buying tickets off the street near Fenway...the streets sort of police themselves,...you won't get ripped off buying tickets for a "normal" game....a couple bucks over face value at most...

as far as a good place to stay? the 4 seasons is nice or the ritz, but if you're looking for an inexpensive place, the hyatt downtown (formally the swissotel) can usually get booked for $40 a night on priceline...check out www.biddingfortravel.com if you "priceline"...

the cape would definitely be more realistic than the vineyard for a few days....the kids would probably like the "mid-cape" area...hyannis, yaromouth. dennis...(about 1 1/2 hours from boston) centraly located from the whole cape.

Stay in Downtown Boston (endless number of posts here on Boston lodging) - area would be Downtown, Copley, Fanueil Hall - would say something like that. If you can possibly afford the high Boston hotel rates, avoid trying to save money by staying someplace called Boston/"something else" - like Revere, Waltham, Somerville, Chelsea - the commuting hassle will make a big dent in your trip - stay fewer nights to save money, not outside Boston. While in Boston, avoid having a car - or if it is a driving trip, just park it and walk or use public transportation.

From your previous post you know I disagree with poster who says it is not that hard to get Red Sox tickets. I would not be comfortable planning to buy them on the street.

Martha's Vineyard may not be easily doable for a few days. Other destination depends on your priorities - history, beach, etc. Mid-Cape is good idea - you will have to stay in hotel since virtually all cottage rentals are Sat-Sat. Try to go mid-week and avoid driving there on Friday evening or Sat AM - traffic will make you wish you stayed home.

Another option is Southern Maine (Wells, Kennebunkport area) if what you want is beach. Or western Mass if you want hiking, etc - could hear music at Tanglewood.

I empathize with fitting vacation into sports schedule. Our vacation always falls between end of summer softball and before preseason fall sport practice.

if you want to do the Cape or Martha's Vineyard, try to go mid week. then the traffic and travel time won't be so bad.

there was an earlier thread about places to stay near Fenway, you could try the new Hotel Commonwealth which is very close to the park. But if you plan to sightsee in Boston as well then you might as well stay in a downtown hotel, and take the T or a taxi to Fenway. Of course, your budget may make the decision for you...

Other area's you might try for a couple of days...you good go up to the southern coast of Maine, or coastal NH...Portsmouth, Kittery, Ogunquit..nice beaches, but very cold water, historic sights.

If baseball is the reason for your trip you could go to Portland Maine, and catch the Sox AA affiliate, as well as see some Maine seashore.

Hi there. We stayed in Boston at the Eliot Hotel and walked to Fenway. The hotel is in a great location and it is a lovely hotel. We had a 1 bedrm suite which had a pullout in the living area and a separate bedroom with double beds.Would be ideal for a family. Cape Cod is a great spot - the mid Cape area is very busy near Hyannis and much quieter as you go towards Provincetown. The National Seashore between Orleans and Truro has beautiful beaches. There are lots of things to do and great restaurants etc. If you are going for a week it would be nice to rent a cottage but do it soon as they rent quickly, otherwise you will be in a motel or cabins along the main highway. The town of Chatham is very charming - lovely boutiques etc but is on the bay side so you have to drive for beaches.

I went to Boston last summer soley to see my beloved Cardinals play in Fenway Park. Planned WAY in advance for my game tickets. Stayed at the Marriot Copley Place. Very, very nice place to stay, got a great rate at that time, and extremely convenient to the "T", which takes you right to Fenway.

I loved the Fenway Park experience... but gotta advise you to stay clear of the Fenway Franks. Have fun!

If you loved Concord and Salem, you may want to consider Rockport or Newburyport, as opposed to Cape Cod.

If you go to the Cape make sure it's on a weekday.....weekends are gridlocked in August.

The lake would be nice with kids, rent a boat and have a ball. Alton Bay NH is about a 90 min drive from Beantown. www.bayside-inn.com

Which lake are you talking about?

Lke Winnepesakee (excuse the spelling). It is in the general vicinity of Laconia, NH - some parts are really tacky and some are nicer.
