OH-PA-NY Road trip--Need route advice
A friend & I will be driving from Cleveland OH to Corning NY one day in August. I90-86 looks like the fastest way, but we've got all day, and we're not big fans of either speed or interstates. Is there a more scenic route we could take?
|
go ahead and take route 90 to Cheektowaga. then take Route 20 east to Route 14 south in Geneva, 14 turns into 414, which will take you to Corning
|
You could get on Rt 6 in PA and take that across the state, then cut north to Corning.

Going Route 20 would be scenic but WAY out of your way. Lots of extra miles and gas.

Thanks for the input,everyone.
Well, rte 20 is definitely scenic, but further north than I intended that day, as it would involve going up into NY, then coming south. I'm going to be going north (actually NE) the next day. Rt 6 looks pretty, though. Any nice little towns for a mid-day stop? |
I'm not finding Route 6 on my NY State map, perhaps it's in PA. I don't know the road, but from looking at my map, how about Rt. 86 to Olean and then Rt. 417 from there into Corning? This would be instead of 86 all the way.

If you've got the time I would definitely recommend trying to avoid the first part of I-86. We just drove from Cincinnati to Northern PA over the 4th of July and our route takes us over I-90/86. We drove 86 to Olean and the road is horrible much of the way. Also, lots of troopers on that part so watch your speed.

KathyK, Rt 6 runs across the top of northern PA--starts just S. of Erie. I found that ok, but you should have seen how long it took me to find Cheektowaga (mainly because I was looking in OH & PA). And I almost want to go there just for the name...
Just as long as nothing reminds me of the road in PA -- ?476?--the one with the Lehigh tunnel, and the 4' concrete divider. |
Invest in a couple of good maps or you could get a 2008 Rand McNally Road Atlas from WalMart for $5.97.

Always glad to see people taking the time to be helpful!

DO NOT go to Cheektowaga for the name. It is a suburb of Buffalo, and while it is a nice home to many, I would never recommend that a traveller go there.
