Siesta Key, Lido Key and LBK are experiencing red tide. It's because of all the warm weather.
Swimming is not advisable and I wouldn't do it, but nobody will stop you if you're brave enough.
Hopefully you are not coming down here in the next week or 2.
You can still enjoy the beach but it can get stinky as dead fish wash up on shore. Sarasota County does a good job cleaning up all the debris as it washes up, but it's kind of gross to be walking up and down the beach and seeing/smelling the dead fish.
We were pretty lucky last year but just about every year previous there was an outbreak of red tide. We don't go to the beach and neither should you if you have a respiratory issues.
We just utilize the pool during that time.

We get the red tide every year around Sept. It is very stinky and we just put up with it until it passes, I guess it's part of the natural sea life cycle in our area. However, it doesn't stop the surfers they are still out surfing in the stench!!

My one time coughing up the dough for a romantic beach-front room on Sanibel Island (expensive even in the early Dec off-season) and they had a big red tide.
Supposedly 20 something tons of dead fish washed up and rotted, and when the wind came from offshore (which it almost always does) the stench was unbearable.
Some vacations are unforgettable -- for the wrong reasons

i was there LAST weekend. Thank heavens because it was primarily a beach vacation (a short one - Thurs-Sun). Siesta beach and water was absolutely perfect. But I did have in my head about red tide as I guess it can happen any time. That would have ruined the vacation for sure.
When I lived there even mild red tide would give me respiratory problems. Not fun.
