Oh Chelsea, where are you?
 

Hello everyone!

My husband has a conference in NYC at the Metropolitan Pavilion in the Chelsea area in mid-April. It's at 125 West 18th St.

I've only been to NYC once, and it wasn't for long. I'm not familiar with this neighborhood. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay here? Or if to stay here?

We don't need a luxury hotel...

Try TripAdvisor as you can adjust it to the neighborhood, your budget, your needs, etc.

There are several new hotels in Chelsea most about 5-10 blocks from the Metropolitan Pavilion. But you can stay anywhere in Manhattan and get there easily by subway or bus, so don't limit yourself. Pick a hotel based on your price (what's your actual budget per night?) and other things you might want to be near like theaters or museums or restaurants

Our budget is $400 a night. Thanks nyer - I was wondering if it might be better to just find a place close to what we want to do -- and then he can take the subway to the Pavilion.

We're staying At Chelsea Pines Inn when we go later this year.

We stayed at Chelsea Pines Inn in 2010 and loved it. My guess, because of its popularity, it will not have any reservations for April, but you can try.

You'll have to check your specific dates, but $400 per night should offer you options in several neighborhoods. Chelsea Pines seems to be a popular place, but it is a more modestly priced hotel and you might want something different, What do you want to be near?

Another vote for Chelsea Pines. Great spot and great staff.

I have stayed several times at the Four Points (Starwood brand) in Chelsea and can vouch for that hotel. Have always had good stays there.

You can easily stay at any hotel in the area. I'd suggest taking a look at the Eventi, which is not exactly in Chelsea but within pretty easy walking distance. Or the Nomad or perhaps even the Gansevoort Flatiron. For your budget, you don't have to stay at a featureless chain like the Four Points Sheraton unless you want to.

In terms of convenience, you can stay at any hotel on the west side between 23rd and 44th streets and be within 2 or 3 subway stops of the venue.

It's so easy to use google maps and map your conference location and then click 'search nearby' and type in hotels to see what options there are. Obviously some specific recos make it easier but this is what you'd see

Chelsea is the area south of midtown and north of the village on the west side. A lot of the hotels with Chelsea in their name are at the north end closer to midtown in what was once the fur district and the flower district.

The closest decent hotel to the conference is the Hampton Inn Chelsea, not exciting but close, clean, good sized rooms, free breakfast and within walking distance. If you want something nicer, the Gramercy Park hotel, the Giraffe, the W Union Square and the newish NoMad are all walkable as are the meatpacking district hotels like the Gansevoort, the Maritime and the Standard, some of which Doug mentioned. The Eventi is a lovely hotel, part of the Kimpton chain, but I think for the same money, the Gramercy Park is closer. The Giraffe mnay be the nicest nearby option within your budget. Some of these others may be too pricey.

While Chelsea Pines is close, it's not for everyone and with a $400/night budget, it doesn't sounds like it's for you.

The Standard Hotel straddles the Highline Park in Chelsea.

The Highline is a fun place, but I wouldn't want to stay there. It's way too far from everything and not that easy to reach unless you plan to take cabs everywhere.

I had forgotten about the Giraffe, though. It's a really great small hotel. And the Gramercy Park Hotel is recommendable as well, and if you stay there, be sure to eat at Maialino.

Have you checked rates for mid-April at any of the hotels recommended above? because the Four Points is $325-350 standard rate during that time period, and when tax is included it get sclose to the $400 budget. That is why I mentioned it, I have stayed in Chelsea in mid-April, and the city is not at low rates then, and the Four Points has always been good for us, as "featureless"as Doug thinks it is. My guess is most of the boutique hotels mentioned are going to be higher during mid-april.

I disagree about the Highline location Doug as I spend every summer there. Both 14th and 23rd Sts. offer trains, and buses go N on 10th, S on 9th.

Are you a Rachel Ray fan? I know that is a loaded question on this forum. Her studio is nearby and she has free tickets. You need to start trying for tickets about three weeks before you go.

Giraffe is $500 and up for standard room that can be cacelled a wk ahead of time with queen bed in mid-April, and that is without taxes added in.

Chinos, I hope you see this. I just this minute got a notice from sniqueaway.com that they are offering the Eventi hotel (klimpton) in Chelsea for $229- 369' depending on room type, king deluxe through premier one berm suite, for month of April. If I was you, I would jump fast on that offer. I have used sniqueaway deals twice, once in nyc and once in santa fe and both were good experiences.
