Off to Naples...hotel advice

My best friend and I are running away from our husbands and kids for a 4-day mini vacation in Naples. I have reservations at the moment at both La Playa and the Registry. We love wonderful hotels, but definately can't afford the Ritz. Looking for a great spot, close enough to upscale cool bars and restaurants,... two late thirty women just looking for a true getaway. Any suggestions???

Both are nice places. But neither are within walking distance of any restaurants (other than their own). Neither is in Naples in fact, but a considerable drive north, and geared to be a "stay here" resort location. If you were looking to stroll to bars and restaurants, you need Escalante, the Inn on Fifth, or Trianon, or the soon to open Bella Sera.

I would suggest staying at the Lemon Tree Inn,..3rd Ave South and Hwy 41. It is a little Doll House location, managed by very personable owners, and is only a 2 block walk to 5th ave.Where all the restaurants / nightlife will be. BTW if you girls would be interested in a day excursion, I give private nature tours of the Everglades,..airboat ride, gators, history etc.

Capt. Hunter, I appreciate your attempt to help if that's what it is, but let's be serious for a moment. Gettinb\Bye said she liked "wonderful hotels". The Lemon Tree Inn is a cute litte redone 1950's motel, but hardly what anyone in the world or in their right mind would call "a great hotel". It does not even belong in the same post as The Ritz, The Registry, and LaPlaya. If someone asked for a "great Naples restaurant" would you suggest Perkins? OK? Is this just a bad attempt to advertise your own business on this site -- something strictly forbidden, by the way??

Patrick,
Congrats go out to your valuable volunteer efforts to give great advice to travelers to the Naples, SW FL area. Your efforts are to be commended. However, I question you critiqing other posters. In this post I read "cant afford the Ritz",..and "close to upscale bars etc.". I offered honest advice from my perspective, and I respect your opinions. My referrels may lean toward the "unchained" personal owner managed restaurants / hotels / motels. I feel that many visitors to this site and other travel web sites seek the "road less traveled" route, instead of comparing the amount of gold inlay in the priemer chain hotels bath fixtures.I respect your submittals, and ask the same in return.
Respectfully submitted,
CaptHunter

Sorry, Capt. but it's pretty hard for me to respect a poster who has no respect for the website itself. It is very clear that your posts are primarily for the purpose of advertising. If you read the rules of Fodor's you will find that is strictly forbidden.

It is also unfortunate that you can't seem to understand that if a person says they love "wonderful" hotels and are looking at LaPlaya and the Registry, the Lemon Tree Inn is probably not at all what they are looking for, and is a really silly suggestion. Now if the post had been, "we are looking at the Day's Inn and Holiday Inn, any other suggestions?" then your post would have been a very good suggestion. I have actually put people up at the Lemon Tree and it is a nice "inexpensive" place, but not as an alternative to LaPlaya!!! You are right about what "some" posters are looking for, but if you read the original post here, you should be able to clearly tell that this poster (GettinBye) does not fit into the category you are describing.

Meanwhile, PLEASE STOP POSTING YOUR ADS. Thank you.

By the way, I'm topping a thread you may want to look at titled "Looking for clean, reasonable lodging in Fort Myers, Naples, and Florida City". You'll see I posted a reply recommending the Lemon Tree Inn. This is the kind of appropriate response to an appropriate question I'm talking about. By the way, I think these are the people who later emailed me to thank me for that recommendation -- it was what THEY were looking for.

OK guys. We should mention to GettinBye that none of the places suggested are on the beach (which both La Playa & Registry are). There are no hotels I know of both in walking distance of downtown/restaurants AND on the beach. If you go to discovernaples.com they have hotels grouped by area.

You are right, McLaurie. The closest to a beachfront "walk to Fifth Ave" hotel is either The Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Resort (but a not very walker friendly route at night for the 20 or so blocks) and the Edgewater Beach Resort (same route plus an extra few blocks).

Patrick, I noticed on that discovernaples site there's a Comfort Inn listed with the beach front hotels with a 5th ave south address. Is it a dump?

I think it probably says "waterfront, not beachfront". It's at the east end of Fifth Avenue, next to the Gordon River Bridge and across from Tin City. Actually it's a fairly decent place -- just what you'd expect from a Comfort Inn chain. The main problem is that it faces that very busy highway and noise of the bridge. But it is also adjacent to the restaurants, Syrah, Bellagio, Stoney's, etc.

By the way, the discovernaples website is sort of out of date and in terms of restaurant listing must be just done by who pays. It still lists Annabelle, which has been closed about a year near -- incidentally soon to open as a second Campiello's with another name -- I forget what it is.
