October Las Vegas lodging questions...Orleans vs ?
Making a short trip in October, with a friend and her parent (70s) and looking for suggestions re accomodations. We will have a rental car. I have stayed on the strip many times in past (Monte Carlo, Bellagio, TI, MGM, etc.), but last 2 visits have gone "off" strip due to better price and less congestion re the hotel aspects. The last trip stayed at Orleans; I don't know anything about South Coast. We will be there midweek and not weekends, to avoid congestion. One person isn't interested at all in the gambling aspects, and wants a nice pool with reasonable restaurants --- one hasn't been to Vegas in years. Any suggestions from recent travelers?

I'm an Orleans fan, but if you want something new I have heard good things about the South Coast. I think both on this board and on tripadvisor.com. I have a cousin who likes the Silverton, southwest of the strip. And a friend who swears by the Gold Coast (recently rennovated rooms I hear), which is near Rio and the Palms.

Check out the very new Rock Rock Hotel & Casino. It's beautiful and away from the Strip (since you have a car it's no problem). We did not stay there but we did go up for lunch and to look around. It's very pretty, lots of red/glass, etc. Several places to eat and a food court too, also movie theaters, pool, etc. If I were not interested in a Strip hotel I'd consider it in a heartbeat.
You might also look into Green Valley Ranch Hotel/Casino. It's also quite nice and is adjacent to a shopping center called "The District".

I think Lori means the Red Rock hotel & casino.

It's part of the Station Casinos (Green Valley Ranch is also). I've stayed at Sunset Station in Henderson which my mom and I really enjoyed (she was 82 at the time).

Here is another vote for Green Valley Ranch. It is beautiful, nice restaurants, movie theater, shopping at The District and even more restaurants out there, and it is in a beautiful part of town. It is in Henderson, and for some reason I feel Henderson is less congested than other areas such as Summerlin where Red Rock Station is. There are also very nice restuarants in the area just away from the GVR. Ventanos is a GREAT Italian restuarant just less than 5 minutes away, plus if you want GREAT pizza go to 3 Brothers Pizza about 3 minutes away. However, with GVR you may not find what some call resonable rates, it can get pricey so you will have to check the rate info on it first. South Coast is fairly new, I think in Dec. will be its 1st anniversary. It is south on the Strip, but away from the hustle and bustle.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Red Rock looks very nice, but it and Green Valley are pricier than what we were looking for. Orleans, Gold Coast, and perhaps South Coast are probably more in the price range, and are at least off the congestion of the strip. Another option is one of the "suite" hotels, where we could have separate sleeping quarters but stay in the same room. That would offset the price of 2 rooms. I have never stayed at the Rio, but that looked like it was slightly less congested/crazy than some on-the-strip locales.

I like the Gold Coast for the location. It's older than the Orleans but rooms have recently been re-done. The pool is nothing special but you'll practically have it to yourselves on weekdays in October. Restaurants very reasonable and next door you can walk to the Rio or across the street to the Palms. Gold Coast shuttle to mid-strip is very frequent and a quick ride.
South Coast, for your info, is a lot like the Orleans. But it's a long LONG shuttle ride into the strip and maybe 5 miles away?

October has a lot of conventions so even weekdays you could hit high room rates. I like the Aladdin for 3-in-a-room because the bathrooms are huge and the toilet is separated.
Up NEAR the Red Rock, in the Summerlin area, is the SUNCOAST...another sister property to the Orleans. The rooms are big and there are a couple of new shopping malls nearby. One other casino is walking distance & Red Rock is a couple of miles away. You may want to rent a car if you choose Suncoast so that the non-gambler could shop etc. You could also take a nice drive out around Red Rock Canyon or even Mt. Charleston or all the way to Zion National Park which would make for a great day trip.
Again the pool here is nothing special but not at all crowded.

The Orleans is a very good inexpensive off-strip hotel, and I haven't been to South Coast yet. If you check tripadvisor.com, you will see the Orleans consistantly rates as the best of the off-strip places. It has a pretty nice, but unexciting pool area. It also has a good breakfast place and a good Mexican restaurant. Its a short drive to the strip, and has all the gambling options you could want, including lower minimum bets than the strip hotels. I stayed there in June and was impressed with the friendly staff.
If one of your friends hasn't been to Vegas in years, may I suggest splurging on one of the pricier buffets in town (specifically Bellagio or Wynn)? They will probably be amazed at the difference from the old 2.99 specials.
Also, there is a restaurant called Lotus of Siam that is considered one of the best Thai restaurants anywhere. It's in a strip mall, and has a cheap lunch buffet. And theres a great Cuban restaurant called Floridas Cafe thats in a Howard Johnsons, and is reasonably priced.
Lastly, if you go to Cheapovegas.com, they review all the restaurants in each hotel, it gives you a nice overview of every property. Have a nice trip

Thanks again for all the great suggestions. I'm always looking for good, reasonable restaurants in Las Vegas; it seems that so many are overblown, and to me...quantity (buffets?) often does not equal quality. Lotus of Siam sounds particularly good. I'm leaning toward Orleans or Gold Coast for all the reasons everyone has mentioned plus they're slightly closer to the strip time-wise. We are actually considering flying in on a Friday and exiting immediately by car to Zion NP for the weekend, and coming back to Vegas for Sun-Mon-Tue, as it seems the strip just gets so crazy and extra-crowded on Fri/Sat. For a senior citizen, it may be harder to get out and see the sights during those days.

Just so you know, usually the PBR (Pro. Bull Riders) comes to town in October, and the Gold Coast is a favorite for the cowboys. So depending on when the PBR is this year and when you are coming in Oct., maybe the two overlap, if so, then be prepared for the Gold Coast to be very hectic with rowdy cowboys....just something to check out.

Thanks for the heads up. It looks like the PBR will be end of October (to beginning of November), and we will be there middle of month so it looks like we will miss that crowd. It is tough trying to avoid major events/crowds, with so many meetings and conventions utilizing Las Vegas these days. Good for business and the city tax coffers, though.
