October in NY
Getting ready for hols. and packing. Will be there third week in October, what should we pack - It seems weather can be quite nice that time of year, what do you think? What about dress in the evening - will probably be going to some nice restaurants (but not neccessarily posh ones), so what about dress codes e.g. will nice shirt and trousers suffice for gents? Thanks
P.S. any info or tips on NY would be welcome, the more the merrier. |
You'll want to reserve at the nicer restaurants, so inquire about dress when you phone to reserve. If any are a coat and tie sort of place, even if not required, it's "better" to dress accordingly. If you want to "blend", remember that New Yorker's are generally dressed for business weekdays and turned out elegantly on the weekends.
Best bet is to check the ten-day forecast at www.weather.com just before you leave for finalizing your packing. Even so, you should plan for a bit warmer or cooler as you just never know. The weather will likely be pleasant, but could be chilly and rainy. And, Manhattan could be quite windy! A wind/waterproof jacket/coat and umbrella are always good to have, along with the ubiquitous layers. |
I assume that you mean NYC? Your post just refers to NY. If you intend on doing any traveling in upstate NY, the weather could be quite a bit cooler than in the NYC area.

Your husband should pack 1 tie "just in case". A blazer/sport jacket is a good idea. Day time sightseeing can be casual unless you're going to an upscale rest. for lunch.
"Tips" is rather vague. Anything specific? |
October is the kick-off to the season for so many wonderful things like Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, The Met, City Opera, Philharmonic (which is moving back to Carnegie Hall next year), and more.
I would suggest going to www.citysearch.com to find things of interest to you. There are still street fairs every weekend which are fun, and of course new exhibits at several of the museums. Sorry to say the Chocolate Exhibit at the Museum of Natural History will be closed, but the Chocolate Cafe will stay, and there are always wonderful exhibits there. The Met Museum is a must for part of the time you will be here, there are also concerts at the hall there and some wonderful performers will be there over the next few months. There are some new things up on Broadway, try www.playbill.com for info and tickets. All of that should keep you very busy while you are here. Have a GREAT time. |
And don't forget time spent just walking and sitting in Central Park. So lovely in the fall~
