ocoa Beach Florida things to do and restaurant suggestions
We are planning a trip to Cocoa Beach this August. We plan on visiting Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral National Seashore.Does anyone have any other must see or do things while we are here? Also we are looking for some good places to eat dinner. What about Rustys in Port Canaveral? Atlantic Ocean Grill? We would like to go one night for good seafood. We are a family traveling with two teenagers and we want to avoid places that have bikini contests or other such things. Any help would be appreciated...Thank you

Go down just a little ways to the Brevard Zoo. The zoo came highly recommended by our hotel staff. When we first got there, it didn't look like much to see and we almost didn't go in. We were so glad we did! They have these beautiful elevated walkways, like a nature preserve, and you can even feed the giraffs! You can even rent kayaks and kayak through parts of the zoo. It's an amazing place.

I'm sure your teens will want to visit the RonJon surfshop. Also, we ate one night at a little restaurant on the "pier" that extends out, it was great for a sandwich and fries and to people watch. I'm sorry I can't remember the name. Can't help you with the seafood place, sorry.

The place we ate was Marlin's on the Cocoa Beach pier. The Atlantic Ocean Grille was more upscale, perhaps someone can comment on their seafood. We had our kids with us and I don't recall any "bikini contests" going on anywhere around the pier, I can't comment about later at night though.

Traveling with 2 teens, I think there's a law requiring you to visit Ron Jon's Surf Shop while you are in Cocoa Beach ;-). You don't say how many days you will be spending in the area. If you have the time, they might enjoy taking a few surfing lessons from one of the surfing schools in the area.
You also may enjoy taking an airboat ride on the St. Johns river. I like Midway Airboats on S.R. 50 west of Titusville the best. Further west from there, in Christmas, FL, is Jungle Adventures (gator farm). It's certainly not Disney World (old and kitschy), but getting a picture of the family in front of "Swampy" (the building looks like a giant alligator) would make for a great Florida souvenir. Continue west on S.R. 50, turn right at the giant Christmas tree and go up a few miles, and you will find Fort Christmas. It's a replica of the fort built during the Seminole Indian wars you can tour. There are also several other types of historical buildings, giving you a taste of Old Florida. It is also a nice shady area for a picnic lunch.
Rusty's is okay, but I prefer Grills at the Port. Just be aware there can be a long wait, especially on weekends (very popular). The local specialty is rock shrimp, and I highly reccomend them! You might try Florida Seafood (S.R. 520), if Grills is too busy. If you like BBQ, I love Slow-N-Low on A1A in Cocoa Beach.

Another good place to have an airboat ride is the Lone Cabbage Fish Camp <http://twisterairboatrides.tripod.com/>. They are located on S.R. 528 (AKA the Beachline) at the St. Johns River.
If you are going in August, you can increase your chances of seeing gators by going at dusk!

The Brevard Zoo as mentioned by egret is excellent. In the summer, I'd go as soon as it opens (9:30) since by noon the animals are lying down in the shade. www.brevardzoo.com
I like Orlando Vic's Lone Cabbage suggestion. Kayaking through the Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach is also a great experience. There are many outfitters; off the top of my head, I can think of Cocoa Beach Kayaking, Adventure Kayaking, and Space Coast Kayaking. Just google any of those.
You've received some excellent restaurant suggestions, let me add two more: Simply Delicious for breakfast and Roberto's for Cuban food. Both in downtown Cocoa Beach.
I don't think the Pier has any bikini contest type special events in August. There is a big surf event on Labor Day weekend, but you can check here for other info. http://www.cocoabeachpier.com/
