oceanside to LA by train

considering doing a day trip to LA from Oceanside- is the train station centrally located- would it be easy to get around and see some sites within walking distance or would we need to take cabs.
any suggestions for what to do - would be with daughter- late 20's.

because my daughter lives in Carlsbad-
so Oceanside just up the road -
but I'm open to suggestions -
I just dont want to have to drive so thought this might be a good option

Before considering this daytrip, you might want to find out how long the trip from Oceanside will take. It might take a couple of hours or more.

Sorry but I don't have any other information for the train from Oceanside, but once you do make it to LA and get to the final stop Union Station, things are pretty central. If you want to go to Hollywood, the red line is just beneath the main terminal in the station. If you just want to stick around downtown LA, Olvera Street is across the street and if its during the week you can take the Dash Bus for $0.25 around downtown easily. This bus can get you to the Music Center, Disney Hall, Little Tokyo, China Town, depending on the route. Go to this website for more info on the this transportation http://www.ladottransit.com/dash/rou.../downtown.html.

Thanks for the info- I think the train takes a couple of hours - but it could take longer than that in traffic driving from Carlsbad and neither one of us know our way around so thought the train might be an easy way to do go.
does sound like once we actually get there getting around wouldnt be too bad.
The thought of driving terrifies me .

And from Union Station, you can also take the Gold Line to Pasadena.

In downtown L.A., in addition to Ai84's list, there's the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Japanese-American Museum, the Cathedral, and tea at the Biltmore Hotel.

If you make it in time for lunch, Phillipe's, a old time french dip (double dipped rolls) is about 3 blocks north from Union Station with in walking distance. They're open late so maybe you can take them to go for your ride back.
