We rent a beach house in Galveston, TX every year. If you pick a "Beachfront" house, you will hear the surf all nite and day!

And ocean and surf conditions. It sounds like you are looking to hear crashing/rolling waves. Suze mentioned Maine. I have spent time in many coastal areas of Maine and you can have crashing surf of it can be like glass on a foggy morning, where the only sound is the gentle clinking of boat's rigging. Our favorite destination for boat rigging sounds is Nantucket Basin Cottages.
The mention of tides is also important. We have stayed many years in Southern Maine and their long sand beaches, if you rent beachfront, twice a day the waves may crash 50 from your property or 500 ft away at low tide. And when the fog rolls in you will only hear a lapping of gentle surf.

Same in Hawaii. Sometimes rolling waves, sometimes silence. Just like rain on Kauai - sometimes torrential roaring showers, sometimes a gentle mist. I do love me some big surf and big rains.

Those are great hotels, but you're right they aren't on the beach. I love the views looking over at the La Jolla Cove from the La Valencia though. Stunning. It is a very short walk down to the beach (which is nice given parking is a bear).

The Lodge as I recall is pretty far back from the beach and atop very high cliffs so you can't access the beach either.

ahh, mr. go that is fantastic. That would be perfect IMHO. Especially being able to walk right into the water from your condo. I might never come home. Which is what lcuy did. She went on vacation in Honolulu in the mid 70's and never came back to the mainland.

We live in Colorado so having an oceanfront holiday is always a treat! In January we spent a week on the central California coast, staying in Pismo Beach, Cambria and Ragged Point. All of our accommodations had ocean views, with waves endlessly crashing into the coastal rocks.

There is a primeval of a fascination watching that, kind of like staring at embers in a campfire. Sometimes rolling rocks add a fascinating sound.

Definitely agree that weather and surf conditions greatly alter what you will hear from day-to-day, hour-to-hour.

I can dig up the names of the exact places we stayed if you are interested. As you head north from Cambria the coast gets more wild feeling and rugged. An example:
