Ocala, FL
Hi, I'm interested in visiting Ocala either this Fall or next Spring. I have a relative that lives there, but we haven't been in touch in a few years. So I'm not able to ask them for advice at this point.
I understand that there is Ocala city and then the forest. I believe my relative is in the city part (in vicinity of 20th St.). What is there to see and do in Ocala area? There are some springs right? I'd really like to visit Sea World for a day, is it doable as a day-trip? I haven't decided yet if I will fly and drive (from PA), or Amtrak and drive. I'd like to have my own vehicle with me, but I don't know if I'm ready for a road-trip that far. I haven't flown since before the 9/11 tragedy, so I'm a little jittery about flying again. If I did fly, I'd probably try to go with Spirit Airlines, since they have the 'big front seats' (I'm a big-built guy). Anyone flown with Spirit? Did you like flying with them ok? Thanks, Greg |
greg,
Ocala is a small town kind of place with lots of horse farms, etc. Not a lot of touristy places except for Silver Springs which is right outside of town. http://www.silversprings.com/ Sea World is about 1 1/2 hours away so I guess it is probably doable as a day trip. The Ocala National Forest is mostly just a huge area east of ocala that is designated as national forest with typical activities (camping, hiking, boating, nature, etc.) http://www.stateparks.com/ocala.html |
If you decide to fly you will have to fly into either MCO-Orlando or SFB-Sanford-Orlando, either way there is an hour+ drive to Ocala.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm gonna stay in Ocala for the first 3-4 days, then head to Orlando for the remainder of my trip. I'm hoping to spend 1 day at Epcot and 1 day at Sea World. Is either MGM or Universal Studios worth a day? I don't mind skipping Disney World. Greg

I just got back from a quick trip to Ocala (and actually have a question out here looking for dog friendly spots for my next visit). We went on a fun ghost tour in old town Ocala. Considered doing a airboat swamp tour but never got around to it.

Sea World in my opinion not worth a whole day. For the kid in you go to Magic Kingdom.

You could hit up Juniper Springs for a hike and some swimming.

I'm also in PA (Harrisburg.) And the last two trips we've made to FL, we used the Auto Train--and loved it! I've got an album on Webshots: http://tinyurl.com/3srql3
No TSA issues (theoretically possible, but highly unlikely.) Roomy seats. And pack as much stuff in your car as your heart desires. Plus a decent supper--with wine! What's not to like? It's a no-brainer decision for us. |
