Oahu - where to stay?
 

Hello fellow Fodorites,

I'm planning a 2-week trip to Oahu in June/July. We are 4 women in our thirties. Where should we stay? We're not so keen on major city action but would still like to be somewhere which has some nightlife.

Also, could we visit some other island or should we just explore Oahu?

Two weeks - you should definitely visit at least 2, and maybe 3 islands, depending on your interests. Given your interests, I'd pick Oahu and Maui.

I agree with 2 or 3 islands. Each island is very distinctive. I would second Oahu and Maui and then add Kauai or the big island for more adventure orientated activities.
On Oahu we always stay in Kailua. It is quiet with beautiful, uncrowded beaches and is not too far from Honolulu/Waikiki for night life. Since Kailua doesn't have hotels (yeah!), we book through www.vrbo.com. They have some amazing and relatively inexpensive properties.

Outrigger on Oahu for one week and Westin in Maui for the second week.

Well for any substantial amount of nightlife you want Waikiki/Honolulu on Oahu. That said it is "major city action" there. The rest of Oahu is pretty quiet.

I personally could easily spend 2 weeks on Oahu, maybe 1 in Waikiki and the other in a condo on a beach somewhere, maybe North Shore?

But you have plenty of time to do a second island if you want. I also like Maui. It just make it a little more complicated to plan, and a little more expensive because of the extra flights.

Definitely agree with Suze about two weeks on Oahu. We just returned last week. Spent the first week on the North Shore and the second week in Waikiki. This is the second year in a row we did that and loved every minute of it.

Thats a terrible occurence at Turtle Bay-didn't hear about it in the local news.

If you are just women travelling I agree that staying closer to the city of Honolulu would be less travel time on road and safer.

Kailua is a nice town with good eateries and beautiful beaches. Yet close enough to Waikiki if you want to be away from the city.If you decide to spend the entire 2 weeks on Oahu there are vacation rentals in Kailua -no hotels.

Agree you could easily add another island.

Kailua is a beautiful place. We have friends who live there. It's true, it's close to Waikiki, but depending on time of day you will hit some real bumper to bumper traffic going back and forth. I speak from experience. We stay in Waikiki and visit our friends in Kailua several times during our stay. More often than not, we hit heavy traffic.

There's lots to do on Oahu and two weeks wouldn't be out of the question. If you don't mind the down time for an inter-island flight, then Maui or Kauai would be good choices.

Okoshi2002: Yes, indeed. Crime at Turtle Bay Resort is not reported; rather, it is a kept unannounced. Hotels don't like the media to talk about crime bcs it deters tourist. Also, Hotels are closely tied to these Travel Web Sites, like Fodor's, through which they attract their customers. That's why Fodor's doesn't like negative reviews and other posts mentioning crime at Hotels. They censor them. Like my previous message you've responded to: it is not here anymore. It is not fair to us, the unsuspected travelers, to be herded to a place like Turtle Bay Resort where crime flourishes and guests have no protection. Please, do not make same mistake as we did. Avoid Turtle Bay Resort until our security is fully guaranteed. Thank you and enjoy beautiful Hawaii !

I would be careful using the word "censoring". It's called moderation of a forum.

Sure of course Fodor's editors keep an eye on these forums and sometimes choose to delete posts that they feel are inappropropriate. I mean think about it, anyone could say anything here to trash a particular business, hotel or resort. I would hardly call that a conspiracry.

I'm sorry for this poster's bad experience, but apparently this or similar posts have been posted repeatedly on many threads. I'm sure this is why the Fodor Editors have decided enough is enough.

Giovanna: you are correct. And I apologize if my posts caused you any inconvenience to you. I posted on several threads hoping at least on of the posts will "stick". None of them do. This post is here because it is weekend. It will be gone tomorrow morning.

We have had our own trip report. We complied with Fodor's rules and regulations. There was no appropriate language and we didn't offend anybody. Just our true story as filed in official Police Report with HPD. We've had 59 responses. One day, our post was "closed", and following day it was removed. Next day, I was banned from this site.

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience. All I am trying to do is to spare you from being violated and then treated like a second class citizen by Turtle Bay Resort. Thank you.

has posted here under a bunch of fake names. He is slightly obsessed with some imagainary incident that happened at Turtle Bay. The editors have prudently and wisely deleted his rants against Turtle Bay Resort because they are unfounded and untrue - most likely.

Nanabee: Yes, indeed. I have to post under different name every day because my previous name is always banned following removal of my post. Even to post this post I had to use different post-name than I used yesterday. Otherwise, I would not do that. It would be incorrect to claim that I pretend to be a different person in every new post.

I do not talk about "imaginary" crime. Legally binding Police Report is on file with HPD. Also, not an obsession here. I am only a victim of crime myself trying to inform other travelers about my experiences. I think we should cooperate with each other in order to protect our selves from places that put our well-being at risk.

Perhaps, it is OK with you to violate women or to steal from vulnerable hotel guests. But we have different standards here: it is not OK with us. Thank you.

No inconvenience to me. I merely posted as a possible explanation to some on this thread why your posts were being deleted. Regardless of your motivation, I personally think you've gone way over the top. It was one thing to try to warn Fodorites about your bad experience, but is it really necessary to keep changing your name in order to repeatedly post the same thing? I think not.

I adore Turtle Bay. When did surfer dude photographer sweeten the story with a woman attacked and violated?

Gyppielou: A young woman was attacked and violated on Dec.19, 2009 in early morning hours at Turtle Bay Hotel. This is a fact. You can contact Honolulu Police Department inquire about this case.
