Oahu - Turtle Bay Resort
 

I haven't seen any recent postings (sorry if I've missed something) about the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's North Shore. I know there were some problems there in early 2005 but has anyone stayed there lately who can provide any details on whether this is an enjoyable place to stay for a trip in April? I'm lookig for an alternative to the fast pace of Waikiki where I can still have easy access to a beach. TIA.

The current Frommer's newsletter (available online) has a glowing trip report about Turtle Bay Resort.

I must be missing something because I didn't see it in the current newsletter... is it the one currently posted on the site or a previous newsletter? Thanks.

It was a newsletter from earlier this month - not the one that came out today. Now I can't find it either! This resort is on my radar for next trip to Oahu mainly because of all the great things I've read about it on Tripadvisor and in trip reports. Maybe someone who has been there very recently will respond. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking. : (

If you are a golfer -- the golf channel is running their Big Break V ladies challenge at this resort's golf course. The shows run on Tuesday at 9pm -- repeated at various times during the week. So you can get a glimpse of the resort / coastline.

DH and I were there begining of Feb. It's fabulous! Most, if not all of the construction is over. It's been a long renovation but it's very much worth it. There is a new restaurant near the beach. We even saw a Monk Seal on the beach just before the WW2 bunker to the left of the Hotel. The food is very good but expensive. We even did the Hawaiian Buffet which was ONO!!! and worth every penny.
I really LOVE this place. Be sure to hit the shrimp trucks! Mahalo!

We haven't stayed there (always stay in Waikiki) but we have walked the grounds and spent time on the North Shore. I would definitely recommend it from what I've seen! It is absolutely beautiful, and the North Shore is a fabulous place to spend time in. Check the reviews on www.tripadvisor.com, the reviews have mostly been positive lately. We are going back to Oahu in August, and are staying in Waikiki again I think, but I definitely plan to stay at that resort some time when I have more time!

And Turtle Bay Resort has horseback riding on the beach...as well as other places.

Thanks to all for the info on Turtle Bay. It sounds like a great option.

Considering splitting up our Oahu visit between Outrigger Waikiki and Turtle Bay. Three nights at Outrigger and two at Turtle Bay. We will then move on to BI. Does it make sense to move hotels? Outrigger gets great reviews on Tripadvisor, but I am a little worried about June being crazy busy and the quiet of Turtle Bay seems appealing. Also, would you go to Outrigger first or Turtle Bay first? Thanks for your input.

I'm not as experienced with Oahu as some others here, having only been there twice. BUT, I think staying at both is a great idea; and I would stay at the Outrigger first and the Turle Bay Resort second... In fact, this is what I plan to do my next trip there!

With five nights, I wouldn't split hotels on Oahu. Save the time it takes to check out of one hotel and into another for other things.

Also, most Outriggers and some others) offer fifth night free. So you can take advantage of that.

Oahu is not that big so you can drive anywhere on the island within an hour or so.

You mentioned going to Big Island from there. That will be a good contrast to the busy Waikiki hotel.

Thanks for the replies. I'm waiting to see what the cost difference will be if we change hotels. As Dusty mentioned, we are getting the benefit of one night "free" at Outrigger, staying five nights and we lose that if we cut our stay short at Outrigger. Just too many darn choices! Crazy, when is your trip? Please pass along your experiences at Turtle Bay via a trip report. Dusty, our original thoughts were exactly as you said, the BI offers a great contrast to Waikiki. Thanks again for your thoughts.

I am also thinking of splitting up a 5 night stay on Oahu because the person I'm traveling with is interested in staying at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider in Waikiki but I would prefer to stay somewhere less busy and more relaxing like Turtle Bay. So even though it will be trouble to switch hotels, it might be worth it for us so that we are able to experience both worlds for a couple of days.

I think breaking up the trip is a good option, The Outrigger is right in the middle of the action, and Waikiki beach, and Turtle Bay is a great place to relax. We've stayed at the Outrigger and loved it. If it was my trip, (I wish it was) I'd do the Outrigger first. Would love to read a trip report upon your return, have fun.

We're still looking at pricing options. Our thoughts are that if we split up the trip, we would go to Turtle Bay first, mainly because we will need a car, and might as well rent at airport, drive to Turtle Bay for two nights and return car in Waikiki. Our thought is if we finish up our visit to Oahu at the Outrigger, the airport will be closer. We'll arrange for a shuttle to take us to airport from Outrigger. Does this seem logical?
