Oahu Snorkeling

Snorkeling from the beach or from a boat, which do you suggest for a relatively new snorkler? Which beaches, which boats?

Hanuama Bay near DiamondHead?

If you go between May and September be sure to visit Shark's Cove. Great snorkeling from the shore. I'm a beginner but felt very comfortable there. Saw a big variety of fish, urchins, etc. It wasn't terribly crowded either. (PS - It's just down the street from turtle beach - LOTS of turtles that will swim right up to you while you are standing in the water).

Hanauma Bay is the classic tourist place for snorkeling for Waikiki visitors. Just expect it to be crowded. I still had a good time there in December (had never snorkeled before and was nervous about it). I later went snorkeling off Waikiki Beach itself (south part of Waikiki). It's not as nice as Hanauma Bay but its really convenient if you happen to be staying 1 block from the beach as I was, the time investment is nil (vs. the time/hassle of getting to Hanauma Bay, watching the video, etc.). And there actually are some decent fish to see in the water off Waikiki. Recommended if you don't have time to snorkel elsewhere.

Aloha! Forget Hanuama Bay...about 40% of the coral is now destroyed (for at least 40 years if they closed the Bay today) and although there is a large variety of fish, it is such a hassle and so over populated with people that it is no longer a place I want to frequent.

For excellent off shore snorkling and swimming with spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and plenty of fish to watch, head over to the Electrical power plant on the leeward side. For a sure fire good experience I recommend the following group for a top rate experience:

These folks are professional, you get lunch upon return and are great with beginners and experienced divers.

Enjoy Hawaii without the hassle and contributing to the destruction of the bay.

Highly recommend Hanauma Bay!In July 2006 we saw lots of fish, turtles and coral too! Just be sure to arrive early because limited number of people allowed in at a time-and plan on waiting in line. There is a fee for Hanauma Bay. We also loved Sharks Cove on the North Shore. Hanauma Bay feels a bit more protected than Sharks Cove if you are a novice.
