Oahu, Hawaii waves in August

I would like to know the waves are like in Oahu, Hawaii for the month of August. In addition, which surfing hot spots to check out that are not too gnarly. I want it to be a safe surf and would appreciate it!

Thanks
Jen

Summer is not surfing season in HI. If you can go in the fall or winter your chances of hitting good waves will be much better. In August the chances are close to nil.

There is definitely surfing in the summer, just not on the North Shore!

My husband surfs all year long, but loves summer, as he doesn't have to drive across the island. This week the waves have been 6 to 8 feet on the south side.

There are several spots he recommended. Waikiki beach is great for beginners, and has the advantage of having board rentals right on the beach. If you are a bit more experienced, there are several breaks that you can find by parking in the public lot behind the Ilikai Hotel. There are also several spots off Ala Moana beach park.

If you want a board for longer than one day, you might try Hawaii Surfboard Rentals. They are online, and will deliver and pick up the board from your hotel.

He prefers surfnewsnetwork.com for the most accurate surf reports.

As a general rule, North is good in winter, and the South in summer. EVEY surfer checks the surf report in the AM, so expect everyone to know where its good each day and get there because the island is so easy to cross

So if you are new to surfing and its going off in the South with aggressive crowds to match, a nice 2-4 swell on the North Shore might be the best ticket
