Oahu beach house dilemma
 

We live in Honolulu and every year we splurge and rent a beach house on Oahu for our son's birthday. He gets to invite 3 friends (the same boys each year) for the weekend and this spring he will be 13 making this the 6th year in a row. We are having so much trouble finding a home that will rent to us for 2 nights with all the hullabaloo over permits.

Any leads for March 2008?

Have you tried the real estate companies? You can see some sample listings at www.hicentral.com.

we do the same every year too and decided to stick it out at a hotel or condo starting next year. my friend started early, found a two bedroom condo in poipu for a great kamaaina rate, most are 2nimin. besides, boy and his buddies don't care as long as they can take their boards out ALL day, they'll stay anywhere. works for me.

Couldn't find anything on hicentral and we have thought of a townhouse at Turtle Bay but it's just not the same as a beach front home; letting the boys run around the yard at night w/ flashlights, fishing, and hitting the beach without getting into a car or crossing any streets or parking lots.
We even thought of a condo (Makaha or Punaluu), but we live in a condo so the "treat" may lose some excitement.
We've stayed in homes from Punaluu to Mokuleia and also Kailua.
I will post if I find any beach homes for 2 nights.

I'm curious what "hullabaloo over permits" is making you unable to rent a house? It sounds like you want to rent during prime Spring break time, when I've never heard of homes renting by the night.

You must have been incredibly lucky in past years finding houses that don't charge by the week.

Why don't you try renting from a previous landlord? Or were you just not good tenants and everyone knows? ;-)

We have always dodged the big spring break crowd since my son's birthday is at the very end of March. We have actually never used any vacation websites (until this year) bcs. we have stayed at friends of friends homes (the local way). But, yes these homes are no longer available to us bcs. 2 of the homes have been reported (?) by their new neighbors. These 2 homes that have stopped renting short term all belong to old "kamai'aina" families. None of them are fancy or big but just on great properties. The other one were sold so we do not have the same local connection anymore.

We will keep trying...I have my uncle making some calls to 2 of his friends who have beach homes, so maybe we will get lucky :)
