Oahu accommodations alternatives

Hi there fellow travelers,
Six active seniors are heading to Maui in Sept. and will stop in Oahu for a couple days. I am researching places to stay in or near Honolulu other than resorts. We like B&Bs, but have found only 1 or 2 in this location and their reviews are mixed.

We will fly into HNL and plan to visit Pearl Harbor and a couple other sights (maybe Diamondhead) as time permits.. We will then fly from HNL to Maui for a week.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

There are lots of places to stay that are not "resorts". Actually most places in Waikiki/Honolulu are simply hotels. The only real "resort" is the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

I'm not aware of any B&B's.

Would a local-style mid-priced hotel work? I'm thinking somewhere like The Breakers:

Oops, you need to click on HOME when you open that link. There's a video that shows the hotel.

Thanks, Suze. I appreciate your setting me right on the resorts. Yes, a local style hotel sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

Sure happy to help.

We often answer this question from the flip-side, because people expect to find lots of mega-resort styled places in Hawaii. But there just aren't many/any in Honolulu/Waikiki. You can more easily find those on Maui, for example.

Most of the larger hotels in Waikiki are high-rise, but there are still a few smaller independent places, low-rise, low-key, with a lot of "aloha".

The thing about lack of resort properties is that land is so precious there, so the "footprint" of the places are mostly smaller scale.

It is interesting Suze but when I click on your website address, I get PAGE NOT FOUND but when I go on line, it is the exact same address. Do not know what is going on here. http://www.breakers-hawaii.com/ is from their website....

Shar, You need to hit the HOME tab (for some reason on The Breakers website). It works fine after that.
