NYC with my 8 year old niece

I live in Brooklyn and I'm taking my niece to NYC for the day tomorrow. We're starting with a build a bear visit. What to do next? She didn't want to do American Girl. Any cute preteen clothing store near 46th and 5th? I don't want to do any shows - we're going to be in tourist central (I usually avoid these places), so I need som help. Any good ideas on how to hang with my niece tomorrow in the city?

You do realize Brooklyn is IN NYC, right?

Not sure what you and your neice are into, but here are some suggestions:

Madeline Tea at the Carlyle Hotel
Dylan's Candy Bar
Serendipity

Apple has a youth workshop; http://www.apple.com/retail/youth/

A visit to Tiffany is also fun and doing some window shopping at some of the high end stores on 5th Ave

The Nintendo store allows you to test out the games

The MOMA is also nearby.

She used to live in Brooklyn too so she's not a stranger to the city. We're just looking to hang out - but its been a long time since she and I have been in the city together. Now that she's 8, I don't know whats out there anymore. The Nintendo store sounds like a good idea. Thank you.

If you end up in Serendipity, frozen hot chocolate is a must. One is big enough to share with an 8 yr old.

Have you heard about all the train delays they're predicting for this weekend? Check MTA website if you're traveling by train. There will be many repair projects going on.

Oh and openhousenewyork has some things for kids this weekend - all free. www.ohny.org

Good Grief!! You are right - I did hear about the train delays. Thank you for the heads up. So I just did some research and came up with a list of things:

Nintendo Store (thank you K-Brooklyn)

FAO Schwartz (I've never walked in there and I've lived here my entire life)

Disney Store
Dylans Candy Bar
Serendipity (Thank you CentralPark girl)

They're all in the same area. I'll let you know what we do.

Thank you guys for your great ideas. I'm definitely using them.

If you're looking for shopping, I think Berkley Girl (upper east side) is a good idea. http://berkleygirl.com/

If you can't get in to Serendipity for lunch, the cafe in Bloomingdale's is a good back up although on a weekend, there could be a line as well. People adore their frozen yogurt with different toppings.

She would probably also like the M&M store in Times Square.
