NYC with my 13 year old
 

I have a daughter that wants to see a dance show (Ballet, modern, jazz….doesn't matter). We will be in NYC May 7,8 and 9. Any suggestions?

We will also be seeing Wicked. Any other Broadway shows you would recommend? Gigi? Kinky Boots? Matilda? If/Then? Cinderella with Carly Rae Jepsen? American in Paris?

Also…want her to stay right in the heart of the craziness…Times Square. I have stayed at the Millennium and wasn't wowed. Any suggestions for hotels in Times Square? $300 or less per night?

If she loves dance she MUST see an American in Paris. If you look at the web sites of Time Out New York and New York Magazine you will find listings of all activities for your dates. Check out the Lincoln Center website - it is sometimes possible to get tickets for rehearsals.

Beat me to it. An American is the ultimate dance musical, especially for ballet.

Cinderella on Broadway has closed.

May gets very expensive, but go to booking.com and see what you find. Lately the Times Square Hilton Garden Inn seems to have some very good prices. (Not really at Times Square, but close enough.) Funny you mentioned the Millenium -- we were less than impressed.

The Joyce Theater, a dance venue, in Chelsea ( 8th Ave /18/19)may have a performance during your dates.

I was thinking about An American in Paris….we will definitely do that! Yay! Thanks for you help everyone…keep suggestions coming if you have more…even restaurants you loved!

For restaurants we need to know:

1) what cuisines you like/dislike
2) what your budget is - either entree or a whole meal with beverage tax and tip

Ellen's Stardust Diner has basic diner fare (and ordinarily I would think 13 might be too old for it) but she might find the singing waitstaff ("resting" B;way chorus boys and girls) to be fun.

My daughter loves Asian food, ramen dishes, Middle Eastern, Italian….she has a great palate. Price not a big factor. Expect to spend $100 for a dinner.

I can't help much with the hotel. Friends recently stayed at The Millford Plaza and were happy. My in-laws always stay at the La Quinta on West 32nd. Not in the heart of Times Square but not far from it either.

My kids (a bit younger but good eaters) like:

Legend for Chinese, but the decor is not exciting and a trip to Chinatown will probably be more interesting for you guys.
Gradisca for Italian. Very kid friendly and the food is great.
Jekyll and Hyde for Times Square craziness.
Empire Diner for an old timey diner and there are lots of galleries nearby. And stroll the High Line while you're at it.

What's more important: food or decor/experience? And do you want to stay close to Times Square for dinner?

If you have the patience for a line for Ramen try Ippudo otherwise go to Rai Rai Ken

For Korean fried chicken try Boka on St Marks. It is below grade and does not have a sign.

Also go to Koreatown for BBQ.

And Manhattan Chinatown during the week for dim sum-weekends are a zoo-Jing Fong, Nom Wah, and Golden Unicorn

There is probably no "restaurant" I have hated more than Jekyll & Hyde LOL

The Milford Plaza is now the Row Hotel

Kids like stores like Evolution on Spring Street and Forbidden Planet on Broadway. And if you can go to Pearl River before it closes. Also if you walk on Broadway from about 8th Street to Canal there might be more stores that sell jeans and shoes than anywhere else in the world.

For ice cream, all store made:

And skip Dylan's candy for a real candy store at 1/2 the price Economy Candy on the Lower East Side

Grom's does not make the gelati in store it is an Italian chain.

But Grom's is still delicious, even if the gelati is made elsewhere!

We've sent friends to the Kimberly but I think it was more like $350/room.
