NYC with 10 yr. old - something different?

I will be in NYC for a quick weekend in May with my 10 yr old daughter. We spent a week there last year doing some of the "big" stuff (Met, Statue of Liberty, Grand Central, Ellis Island etc.) so we're looking for something interesting and different. She's not into American Girl, MTV or Niketown type places. We will be spending some time with family, so won't have time for a show. Does anyone have any new ideas?

Perhaps describing some of the things she IS into will help us point you in the right direction . . . Is she a reader? A tour of the beautiful 42nd Street Library and a walk in Greenwich Village aimed at famous authors homes might suit her, along with visits to the great bookstores - The Strand, Union Square Barnes and Noble . . . . Is she into nature or animals? The Bronx Zoo or birding in Central Park might work. What was her school cirriculum this year? American History ? Lower Manhattan and The Tenement Museum might engage her . . . a little more guidance would help.

The tenemant museum in the lower east side
walking over the brooklyn bridge
tour some of the tall ships at the South St. Seaport
visit the Forbes Gallery in the village (this has been a favorite of my son for years)
while in the village area, go to Washington square park, on a nice day there's always some kind of street performers
climbing the rocks at central park,
having a meal at the 2nd av deli or in little Italy
stroll through a street fair (various location every weekend in the summer)

Great ideas - thanks - I forgot about the Library. Do you know if it is open on Sat/Sun? We did a tour at the Tenement museum, but might try another one - is there anyting else of interest on the Lower East Side?

For library info, check www.NYPL.org.
In the Lower East side you have Gus' Pickles, Katz Deli and there this really cheap candy store packed with all kinds of goodies (I can't think of the name off hand).

No one's mentioned one of the leading attractions for young folks--the American Museum of Natural History. Among the highlights are the two plantarium shows, the dinosaur collection, a hands-on section and a lot, lot more.

If she's into sports at all, visiting Chelsea Piers might be fun. Have a look at chelseapiers.com for more info. Or, rent a row boat in Central Park for an hour.

For eating-Serendipity? (maybe rent her the movie before hand) Dylan's Candy store near Serendipity & Bloomies.
Shop along Canal St.

Also...it never hurts to ask what she might like to do. Have fun.

Would she like to go to tea? If you think she might say the word and you'll get some nice options in all price ranges.

Yes, Janie, Economy Candy was what I was thinking of. This is a one of a kind candy store.

Economy Candy is already on the list - she saw a profile on the Food Nework and can't wait. I've looked it up at 108 Rivington Street. You've all given me many great ideas, several that we've done before and plan to do again.
thanks

Is economy candy open on saturday?

SFM Apr 30th, 2004 04:24 AM

There's also a cool restaurant/arcade called Mars. It's in midtown and while the food is ok, that atmosphere is fun for kids because it's made to look as if you are on the planet Mars (duh!). I enjoyed it and I'm way past 10 years old. There's always the Bronx zoo, too. Have a great time!
