NYC - Wicked on Broadway

I haven't been able to find any discount tix on line for Wicked and wondered if anyone has had luck getting them at TKTS? We will be in The City the first week of January.

Wicked has not had to discount their tickets as they are sold out pretty much every night. If I were you, I would splurge and buy them at full price. It's a great show, and Idina Menzel is leaving in January so if you can see her, it would be well worth it!

Thanks Frances - I think I will wait for the touring production since we are going to be in town for a week and would like to see a few shows. Don't want to break the bank on one show!

It'll be many months, perhaps years, before you'll see Wicked tickets at TKTS.
When are you coming to NYC. If it's around the year-end holidays, you'll have a limited choice of discounted shows.

Howard - I have given up on Wicked, it is bound to be in a local theater in the future. I've also given up on The Foreigner, which you advised me on earlier - and I just found that there will be a local theater production of it here in Florida in the spring! I've also read some of your advice to others, and I really appreciate your insights - thanks!
To answer your question, I am coming to NYC Jan 2nd through 9th. I am flying my 18 yr old niece in from San Diego as a gift for her HS graduation. Should be great fun!
I have tix for 'night Mother and Wonderful Town - we might try for Phantom once we get there.

That week is usually a very quiet one for Broadway shows. You probably will be able to get tickets at TKTS for Phantom and a lot of other shows (but not Wicked!).

I was in NYC Dec. 3 - 7th and the lines for the discount tickets were LONG. I found Wicked tickets online at $150.00, Rear Mezzanine from outletcentertickets.com. Had them overnighted. Idina Menzel is unbelievable. If you do find some online, go for the back row in the mezzanine and save a little money. We could see and hear perfectly because the Gershwin Theatre is wonderfully suited for Broadway, very different from most touring venues. Hope you have a good trip. I've heard that Brooke Shields is really enjoyable in Wonderful Town. I would've loved to have seen Matthew Broderick in The Foreigner! And Billy Crystal's show. And Dracula.......

Independancedaybaby, I'm confused. You say about saving money by going to the back of the mezzanine on line. How many tickets did you get for your $150???

I personally will skip a show rather than sit that far back. There's no way I can see the actors' faces from that distance and I'll miss much of what the show is about. But maybe some of you have better eyesight than I do.

I have to agree with Patrick, I would not consider back row seats for Wicked, the Gershwin is a huge theater, you are NOT going to find discounted tickets for this show for some time.

I agree with indepencedaybaby. I saw Wicked last Thursday and was a little hesitant about our rear mezzanine seats. But, we were NOT disappointed. I did have my binocs for the facial expressions but due to the magnificant theater, I did not feel cheated. And yes, Idina Menzel was powerful.

You could always try to get tickets by going for rush. I managed to get tickets for Wicked that way last March. You may or may not get tickets, but if you do they're front row and only $25 a piece. Try here for other rush policies:

Great show!!! It's worth the extra$$ to sit in the orchestra.

checkout Craigslist, here's the link.

I'll second the suggestion for Craigslist. Having recently discovered Craigslist and successfully found a rental apartment in NYC from there, I checked out the "tickets" area. It could be renamed the "Wicked" room. It is filled with people selling and looking for Wicked tickets.

HowardR Dec 27th, 2004 05:50 AM

Yes, and they're all on sale for more than double the box office price. Thanks, but I don't think Wicked is worth over $200 a ticket!

Patrick Dec 27th, 2004 07:29 AM

Huh? Howard, you must have looked at a different list than I did. While some were obviously double priced, there are numerous offers from people who say their plans changed and they want to get their money's worth out of them. Several were at actual face value -- some even for "best offer". I even saw a pair of tickets in 10th row center that they wanted $95 each for --but I'm sure those are gone by now.

Hope you don't mind my tagging another question onto this thread. I rarely go to plays (and certainly not on Broadway) so I don't know what kind of seats to look out for. There are seats for Wicked in March at the Gershwin on row J for $160; how is the view from these seats? What's a good "mid-level" cut-off that won't make the actors look like ants?

What are the best web sites to check out Broadway tickets?

Thanks.
