NYC - Which play?

Hi,

I'm going to NY in April and would love to go and see a play. Can anyone recommend something? I'm not fussy what I see. Would like to see something with a big name in it if I can. It's my first trip to NY.

Thanks, Laura

If you have an American Express card, you can buy tickets now for "Three Days of Rain" with Julia Roberts- names don't get much bigger than that! It's her stage debut, so I can't vouch for how it will be. Previews begin at the end of March.

Just to be sure- when you say "play," do you mean an actual play, or are you looking for suggestions for musicals as well?

I'd suggest taking a look at www.playbill.com to see what is currently playing so you have an idea of what you might be interested in seeing. Also look around for discount codes on theatre sites, as shows are getting more and more expensive each year.

Another option is to wait till you get here and go to TKTS (2 locations, Times Square where you will WAIT in line a LONG time OR South ST. Seaport, no line and it opens at 10am.). TKTS you can get half price tickets to that evenings performace and alot of shows will be available in April, it is not quite tourist season yet.

Have a GREAT time while you are here.

It would help if you tell us what type of show you'd like to see--musical or straight play, comedy or drama?
One clarification on TarheelsInNj posting about Three Days of Rain, you need an American Express GOLD Card right now for tickets.
And, I'll have to disagree with wantsomesun. April is a busy tourist season in New York, what with school vacations and the Easter holiday! It's also a busy meetings and conventions time.

Hi all,

I'm not interested in a musical but would love to see drama or comedy. I'll be in the Big Apple just before Easter.

Thanks, Laura

Well if it's a play you're interested in, I would also recommend looking into "Doubt"- one of the most acclaimed plays of the year. For a comedy, a revival of Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park" is playing now.

Howard, thanks for the clarification- you're right! Gold Card only. Tickets go on sale to non-Gold Card holders January 28th.

Then, it's definitely Doubt. An outstanding theatrical experience. And, there's a good chance for discount tickets. Keep checking Playbill.com and broadwaybox.com for offers. It's too early for April discounts. Just keep checking.

I booked my ticket today for "Three Days of Rain" which I'm really excited about. Many thanks for the help!
