nyc.which play

first time in nyc. would like a suggestion of well reviewed play; I like drama and musicals. was thinking about Phantom of the Opera; if you saw it at majestic theatre, what did you think of that production? thanks

Phantom is a great show, the music is wonderful, and it's been running for years. It's a mainstay, a first show for many, and the tickets have easy availability as well. Sounds like a good choice, although there are well over 30 Broadway shows running right now, so be sure to check out all your options before choosing. Good luck!

Phantom is an excellent, classic musical. It has wonderful music and a good storyline. If it is your first time in NYC, then it is a good choice. However, as tpatricco mentioned, you might want to check out your options first. BEcause it is your first time in NYC, you might want to see a larger, brassier musical. Although Phantom is pretty big and glossy, there are a number of other ones out there, such as Wicked or Bombay Dreams. Although these may not stand the test of time and are not quite up to the standard of the Phantom of the Opera, they are sure to blow your socks off. Enjoy your trip.

thanks for replies. After some research I think Bombay Dreams might suit me better.

If you want to save some money on Bombay Dreams tickets, go to the Playbill website (www.playbill.com), join its club (it's free) and then you are eligible for discount tickets for quite a few shows including Bombay Dreams.

I just saw Bombay Dreams the other night - it was phenomenal. I am a big Bway theater fan and have seen pretty much all of the classics. Phantom is wonderful but a heavier drama - Bombay is all light and fun with beautiful music, costumes and scenery.

Another "classic" musical is 42nd St. Since it's your first time in NYC, you might enjoy that. Big chorus line & dance numbers. Think about whether you'd enjoy a show with music you know vs something brand new. In addition to playbill.com & similar websites, there's also the TKTS booth where you can get discount tickets same day as performance (or for matinees, the day before if you go t the downtown booth at the South Street Seaport.
