NYC Wedding Reception
Can anyone recommend a reasonable place for a wedding reception for about 120-40 people in Manhattan. I prefer a place that can provide the food, rather than a location that requires a separate caterer. Also, there must be room for a small dance floor. Thanks for any suggestions!

I planned my wedding in Manhattan several years ago. There are dozens and dozens of places, so you haven't give too much detail to go on. I found a book/magazine called Locations in the wedding magazine section of a big newsstand that was really helpful. Can you narrow it down---hotel, museum catering space, boat, outdoors, details of what mood of space---formal, informal, loft, etc. Price, of course, is another big factor.

Plan on $200-$400 per person. Really expensive and places book up 18 months out.

Yes, I'm aware of many places in the $200-$400 range. I'd like something substantially less, and I believe they exist! (Perhaps at a restaurant. For example, Le Perigord, which is delicious, will do a seated luncheon for about $50-$60 pp, bar additional. They don't have enough room however, and can't really put in a dance floor.) I've checked out Locations, but most of their spots require a separate caterer. Thanks again for any help.

In that price range and for that size, I have no clue--sorry.

I have no idea what the price would be, but the Central Park Boathouse does weddings, is lovely, would provide the food and has room for a small dance floor.
|
Central Park Boathouse is priced according to the entree you choose -- it is around $150-175 per person with a 4-hour open bar.

The Americas Society, the Otto Kahn Mansion and the Pratt Mansions all fit your size requirements, but you'd need a separate caterer.

Have you tried theknot.com or some of the NY bridal magazines that focus on vendors in this area? I remember that there were lots of restaurants that would host a reception, including Tribeca Grill, Russian Tea Room (now closed), Boathouse, places in the Seaport, etc.

Having just gotten married, i can tell you it will be difficult (not impossible, perhaps, but VERY difficult)finding a place that can seat that many people at that price.

Also keep in mind that even if you can find a place at $70, most places add 20% gratuity and 8 1/2% tax, which just took a reasonable $70 up to $90.

We had our rehersal dinner at 14 Wall St which may fit the bill for what you're looking for... lovely space and used to be JP Morgan's "penthouse in the sky". Give them a call at www.14wallstreetrestaurant.com and ask for Nikki, she was great to deal with.

To get the place you want, at the price you want, how about getting married in the morning around 10AM and having an 11AM brunch? Breakfast/brunch receptions are about 1/3 the price of afternoon/evening affairs and you can minimize alcohol by serving bloody mary's and mimosas only.

ttt for Sal.

Thanks for all the advice!

why not the ymca?

Sal:
I don't know how fancy a place you wanted, but check out Fez @ Time Cafe.
It is a whole separate floor upstairs from Time Cafe , @ Broadway & 85th St. It's a large, square room with booths all around, surrounding a sunken dance floor. They will cater an affair, and the room can hold the # of people you need. The prices are reasonable - I know, I organized a networking party there for 100. I had a full buffet dinner, 1 hr open bar for about $45/person. It's a nice space, decorated in a Morrocan theme, and it will be all yours!

How about outside? It would be cool to be married in Central Park.
