NYC weather
Leaving in 2 days for NYC and the forecast is calling for hot days Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a 30% chance of thunderstorms.
Just wondering whether it gets humid in NYC when it's hot or is it a dry heat? |
It gets more humid than you could possibly imagine....it is an island, after all.
|
Hot, hot, hot and very humid. The concrete holds in all the heat, so it often seems hotter in the city than the thermostat would suggest. The subway platforms are also deadly.
|
The thought of dry heat is hysterical - where on earth did you get that idea?!?
I would also the weekend weather with a grain of salt. I find the weather channel has 50% chance of accurately predicting the current weather, much less the weather three days out. |
Right now it is hot, humid, muggy, hazy and pretty much disgusting...
|
Lizziea06, I've never been to NYC before, so I am not familiar with the weather. Oddly enough, there are places in the U.S. with dry heat. Yes, I realize that a forecast 3 days prior is not the absolute more reliable, but it's better than nothing. At least I can determine what to take and check the forecast the day of leaving and make any changes.
Fortunately (or not), I'm used to hot, humid weather as that is basically our summer in Montreal. So I guess I'll be packing light for our trip! Thanks for your replies. |
It's super hot, as the other replies have stated, so pack light and drink lots of water! Have a great trip!
|
also bring an umbrella just in case. but i have to tell that they are wrong about the rain most of the time.
|
Hyooooomid indeed!! I am at work in NY right now (no AC) and it's deadly. Drink lots of water and be prepared to sweat. You'll be doing quite a bit of walking, I'd imagine, so you'll be quite 'damp.' Be sure to take some breaks at some cool spots in the shade or in the air conditioning! Have a great time!!
|
It's true, I've lived here for 15 yrs and it can be a sauna here. I for one hate humid heat, but it's actually quite nice out this morning. Warm, with a nice breeze and very little humidity. Hopefully it will stay this way for you! I actually checked http://weatherbug.com">weatherbug.com and as of now, it seems like Friday will be the hottest of the 3 days. But as long you dress light and aren't running around like crazy, you should be fine. And make sure where ever you're staying has AC!

Thanks again everyone. The umbrella is definitely being packed, and hopefully we won't have to use it!

The places with dry heat are deserts - not usually located next to enormous oceans. New York in the summer is hot (80s usually - but up to 100) and humid (70% and up) and violent thunderstorms are not unknown. So have cool - but not bare clothing, good walking shoes and a portable umbie. And take lots of breaks for AC and water. |
No matter how hot it is outside, carry a sweater for going indoors, where it's usually WAY overcooled.
|
Thanks again to everyone. The summer really sounds exactly like it is here in Montreal...
|
djkbooks, could you please tell me where I could find a little of that way overcooled stuff? I love New York, and go every chance I get (including tomorrow!), but I find the air-conditioning in many restaurants to be minimal at best, even though I see people wearing shawls, sweaters, etc. The only restaurant I have been in that has been over air-conditioned lately is Joe Allen's!
|
Another thing to keep in mind...after it rains, it is often worse than before! More humidity and it seems like a sauna as steam rises from the street. There are other times however, that the rain will break the heat. Hope for those, but expect the sauna!

I think that's just personal prefeence. I too find that indoors is usually not cool enough - at lesat not as cool as I keep our apartment. But there are people with sweatrs etc. I alsways assumed they were torists from hotter climates who hate anything under 80. To me the worst is shopping when the store isnt cool enough - who wants to try on clothes when it's 80 and you're sweating? (My idea of the perect summer is Stockholm - high in the low 70's and about 60 at night. Cool enough to do active things but still warm enough for the beach. |
Well, we're back and although we had a beautiful, sunny day Friday, it rained Saturday, Sunday and yesterday. It was humid and warm and just wet :( We still had a great time though!
We absolutely needed to have a sweater on hand when going indoors, and even going between the subway platform and the subway itself. The air conditioning just hits you and can be quite chilly. Thanks again to everyone! |
Is it nice where you are now? 'Cause I'd be willing to swap!! :D
Humid doesn't even begin to decribe the weather right now! |
