NYC visit during pregnancy
After buying airline tickets to NYC we found about the pregnancy. My wife will be 25 weeks at the time of the trip which will be in October. It is our first visit and I am worried that it will be too much for her if most sights and activities will involve long walks or standing most of the time. Would you advise against the trip or in favor? Perhaps I am worrying too much.
Thanks

What does her doctor say? I would think that she would be OK, as long as you both agree that if she says that she is tired, you will go and find somewhere to sit down or you will catch a cab and go back to wherever you are staying. Most women that I know work through their pregnancy and are fine, so I would think that NYC would be OK if you are willing to stop and take a break when she says she needs it.

If the trip will involve a lot more walking and activity than she is used to it may be a problem. If she is usually very active and used to walking long distances it may not be a problem. Make a plan that involved the amount of activity she is used to and she should be fine.

How has the pregnancy been so far? That is usually an indicator of what things will be like down the road.
Being in the mid trimester will help. It usually is the easiest of the three. Be sure to get a hotel in midtown so that when she gets tired, it is easy for her to go back for a nap/rest. Don't want to have to be trekking out to some hotel in the burbs.
Proper shoes a must, too.
And I would absolutely run this by her doctor.

If she has a normal pregnancy and is normally somewhat active, she should be fine. You can use public transportation or take cabs if she's tired. Most museums do have benches or some kind of seating so she can rest if need be. I lived in NYC during 2 pregnancies. I do lots of walking in my day-to-day routine and the pregnancy really didn't make much of a difference, even during the 2nd pregnancy when I was also pushing a stroller much of the time. Also October weather-wise should be fairly comfortable.
My biggest issue during my pregnancy, was when I had lots of errands to do, I had to plan them around public rest room access. There are many decent ones if you know where to go (most hotels, department stores, B&N stores, Lincoln Center, Forbes Gallery, etc).

Although I do think her doctor should "approve", in general, I think you're making an issue out of something that isn't. I went to Paris when I was 20 weeks pregnant, and I know someone who went to Italy at 7 months. It shouldn't be a big deal.
BTW, if you have an iPhone, download the app Sit or Squat - it identifies restrooms wherever you happen to be.

alasdefuego: My pregnancy experiences have nothing to do with your wife's. Your doctor will give you the information you need so you and your wife can make an informed decision. (Congratulations, by the way!)

I went to NYC when I was about that pregnant and the only problem I had is I got pretty bad round ligament pain from walking too much one day and then had to pretty much do nothing (we hung out in Central Park) the next. So just be aware if she pushes herself she might pay later. Also definitely line up bathroom stops, in my most recent trip to NYC we had to go looong times between bathroom breaks, which of course is not possible when you're pregnant.

25 weeks is a good time to go as she'll be in that good in-between stage (not exhausted and morning sick from 1st rimester or HUGe and uncomfortable as you can be in the last) and in October it should be nice weather.
Pregnancy is not a broken leg. I would think if she knows her limits she should have a wonderful trip. Finding bathrooms might be the only trick!

Obviously, 'normal' is different for everyone. I had a 'normal' pregnancy with my twins which was much different than my 'normal' single birth pregnancies. Pregnancy isn't an illness but it isn't 'business as usual' either. A doctor should be consulted first as well as your insurance provider. Medicine can do all sorts of wonderful things these days in the event of a premmature birth and you'll want to make sure you're covered for the unexpected. Common sense, right? : )

I think that's more or less standard procedure to not fly towards the end of the pregnancy.
If her pregnancy so far is so good, then I'd say odds are it will stay that way.
Best of luck to you both and enjoy NYC!
