Thank you for a great trip report. I am New York City born and bred but I moved to Florida with my husband and children 15 years ago and on most vacations all we want to do is visit NYC! We're going again in March because I bought second row Lion King tickets one year in advance and now I'm trying for The Producers as well.

I've been all over Europe, but NYC remains my favorite city.

Another possible choice for larger hotel rooms is the Roosevelt Hotel across from Grand Central. A friend recently stayed there and had a large, recently renovated room for $169.

And for the person asking about Lion King tickets at TKTS - not even a quarter of the people on the standby line (several hours long)at the Lion King box office are able to get tickets. As I said, I bought mine one year in advance, and I also saw the show two years ago!

apc, what a lovely trip report--nice for New Yorkers to read, and what you offer your fellow travellers is so valuable.

If you like the Gramercy Park area but maybe not the prices at W Union Square (& are the rooms small? I might have read that somewhere), you could htink about Gramercy Park Hotel, which is right ON the park. I don't know if it has had some room renovation or not; it's an older generation of hotel and used to have a funkiness factor--but that was/is part of its appeal for people who like the neighborhood. Attracts lots of Europeans, or did.
