NYC-traveling to and within
 

Hubby and I will be traveling to NYC and New England the second week in June. We would love any advice about riding the train into NYC from Fairfield CT, returning to CT each night to sleep. (Do the trains run out of GCS to CT all night?) After arriving at Grand Central Station, how do we find the subway to get to Chinatown? Is it the same subway that takes us to Wall Street the following day? We hope to come into NYC, visiting different parts of the city each of our three days visiting there. Any advice that you can give us would be most appreciated. And we will feel so grateful, that if you decide to come visit OUR city, in Lincoln, Nebraska, let us help YOU! We can guarantee that it would be a FAR different experience than coming into NYC, but we could guarantee you some wonderful college football. Go Big Red! heh heh<BR>Mimi

From Conn., you'll be taking Metro North. They do not run all night but should run until 1 or 2, depending on the station you are going to. If you go to their website, it should allow you to search the schedule by specific station.<BR><BR>In terms of the subway, you'll want to take the 4-5-6. (The green colored signs.) There is a stop in Grand Central which is to the left of the information booth and ticket counters. To Chinatown, take the 6 to Canal St. To Wall St., take the 4 or 5 to that station. <BR><BR>Good luck.

Mimi- it's been said here many times before and I'll repeat it: if there's any way possible, try to stay in Manhattan at a hotel. It will add immeasureably to your experience. It's so much easier and so much more complete an experience that the added expense will be well justified. Many folks have been getting great deals on Priceline and from discounters/consolidators for NYC hotels. GCT (it's generally referred to as Grand Central Terminal rather than Station) has direct subway access - you can take the 4,5,6 to reach Chinatwon and also to reach wall Street or take the Times Square shuttle to get to many other lines. Please post with more specific questions of possible as you'll get loads of good advice. I did just post some very general tips on another thread that you may want to review - it's entitled "New York on Budget (mid - late May)" and should still be in the top 50 or 100 (but moving fast - this board seems incredibly busy lately).

Hi Mimi,<BR>Here are some specifics:<BR><BR>The last train back from Grand Central to Fairfield is 1:30am. (By the way, Owen has it wrong, the official name is Grand Central Terminal but New Yorkers say Grand Central Station, hence the saying "This place is like Grand Central Station" meaning very hectic.)<BR><BR>When you get to Grand Central you go downstairs for the Lexington Avenue Subway line (the 4, 5 and 6 trains). To get to Chinatown you take the Downtown #6 to Canal Street which leaves you off in the heart of Chinatown. To get to Wall Street you also take the Lexington Avenue Subway line but this time you take the Downtown 4 or 5 train to the Wall Street stop.<BR>Feel free to drop me a line on my email if you have any other questions.<BR>John
