NYC Transportation ? - from LGA to Queens
 

My son is flying into LGA tomorrow night from college to meet up with us in the city - but the first night he is staying w/ a friend in Queens who he can not get a hold of .....college kids....sometimes......

So, where does a mother turn but to her Fodor pals !

How do I tell him is best way to get from LGA to
60-87 67th Ave in Queens? Taxi? Reserve a car?
Subway? Bus?

Does anyone know or do you know of a web page that would assist with this type of info -

and before I get yelled at, yes he usually figures it all out but he is now w/out internet for the night which is why he called and plus I trust you all more for the right info and the safe info :)

If budget allows, I would go with a cab. It is safe and direct. I looked at the train system, it looks like the M train can put him there but I dont know how to get to the M Train from the Airport. but here is the link to the MTA map. I am not familiar with Queens - if he gets in the taxi line at LGA, will a taxi go there (in other words, is it too far, too much of a bother, will they rather only do mid town, etc) or should I try and call a service tomorrow - any opinion on this?

and if anyone else knows approx cost - just so I can make sure he has enough cash on him tomorrow before he leaves school to catch his plane -
and is cab/service/etc better since it is first day of public school vacation or does that not impact availability of cabs at LGA?

La Guardia is IN Queens (one of NYC's outer boroughs). I would do a cab - since it's only about 5 miles and the fare will be minimal. It's not worth calling a car service - for which a minimum charge would apply.

(There is no subway at LGA and buses would involve complicated changes.)

Yes, get in the cab line. The cabbie wont mind. And NYTraveler is right, the bus system would make it complicated.

wow escargot, it'll all be OK - 67th Avenue in queens is pretty close to la Guardia - maybe a $15 cab ride depending on time of day/traffic.

Tomorrow is not the first day of public school vacation - NYC schools were off last week and kids went back yesterday.

If you want to figure out the distance, just use mapquest or google maps.

clearly the only part of NYC I am familiar with is either Manhattan where my daughter lives and brooklyn where we have some favorite spots :) or Long Island where my sister in law lives - and I can get myself to the Bronx Botanical Garden by train :)
unfortunately neither of my family are reachable until late tomorrow so your help is truly, truly appreciated -

There might be a minor catch to this, if the cab driver does not know Queens and that is more than possible.

I would suggest having him talk to the dispatcher and teh address he is going to and make sure the driver knows how to get there.

At the taxi line there is a dispather responsible for the taxi lines and getting people into the cabs as quickly as possible to keep the lines flowing. Tell him to ask BEFORE he gets into the cab.

Totally agree with travelbuff. As I was reading this I thought, the taxi driver will likely NOT know how to get there. If son had internet access he could print out directions from mapquest or google.map. Maybe you could get the directions and read them to him on the phone? Mapquest estimates a 10 minute drive & 5.66 miles. Is it near Queens College?

THANKS ! He took your advice, spoke with dispatcher, and in no time he was in a taxi and off to Queens, which was a short and easy ride seeing as the driver knew where he was going -
of course, his flight was delayed two hours coming in b/c of winds and on Sunday his flight was canceled (on Saturday night at 10pm) so he booked himself on an early Sunday amtrak to Boston, a bus from Boston to Manchester NH, a shuttle from the train station to the airport in Manchester, grabbed his car and had a somewhat tedious slush/rain/snow/windy ride back to school -

for clarification, i shoudl have said his fligth was delayed from 9am to 2pm, but we thought that did not bode well, so went w/ amtrak instead of hiim possibly getting delayed longer or stuck overnight, which many in our hotel already were !
