NYC to Wilkes-Barre, PA -- best way?

Hello,

I'll be visiting a friend in NYC next month prior to a meeting in Shavertown, PA -- which is between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. Is a rental car my best option (and if so, about how a long a trip is it, assuming I leave in the off-hours), or is there train service?

Advice appreciated...thanks in advance!

Here is direct bus service from NYC Port Authority Bu Terminal (midtown Manhattan) to Wilkes Barre Terminal:

There may more more services than this one, but this was the first that came up.

There is no train.

Map directions show a 2.5 hour drive - but I would assume that after you get out of NYC - however long that may take.

Thanks both! I don't like buses; I'd probably feel better driving.

I think it will take you 2.5- 3 hours easily from NYC, if not more. You just never know about the traffic leaving NYC and through the first part of your trip through NJ. One small snafu and you can be sitting in traffic for hours. Leaving after 10am and before 1pm would be your best bet.

Depending on where you are in NYC will depend on which route you'll travel. If you will be in mid-town, use the Lincoln tunnel. Take the turnpike south and take Rt 280 until it runs into Rt 80. Depending on where you are going in Wilkes-Barre will depend on which highway north you'll take after you get to PA. If you are staying someplace else in the city, let me know and I might recommend another way out of the city.
