Scarlett-

Palmetto Bugs are HUGE roaches...they come out when the lights are turned on...

Best bet--Get on a MONTHLY EXTERMINATING CONTRACT...

We have a contract on our condo in Fla and NEVER have bugs..it is kept under control..

Also , our motel of choice for travel is La Quinta -since they do accept pets..But we never register the pet-- we just bring her in the room and all is well...At 11pm , you see tons of people out walking their dogs at the hotel...

Best of Luck in FLA>...You lucky person!
We have 4 inches of snow today with a layer of ice on top!

Those palmetto bugs/flying roaches used to zoom out of my rangehood at night. If you ever have insomnia and walk to the kitchen to get a glass of milk, it can make quite an impression on you! We were in a condo so there was really no way to ensure other owner's pesticidal tendencies.

I'd been wondering how you made out on the trip down. Glad to hear all went well.

It's been so awful up here, have been contemplating putting my pup in the car & driving down to Fla but DH isn't ready to visit MIL

The brown reckluse spiders are the ones to avoid. DH was bitten by one in NYC (came from flowers he'd bought me on Madison Ave.!) & was very ill.

I'd have a fire in the f/p in case anybody else has made a home in there.

Well, welcome to my neck of the woods. I'm just up the road on Amelia Island. Come up for a visit when you're ready for a low key weekend get- away.
It looks like you're settling in quite well. Don't miss BB's for a good meal, its also in the San Marco area.
You've come just at the right time of year--February is nice an cool, and March is just perfect! Hopefully you'll learn to love the place before the August heat sets in

Scarlett--
Glad to hear you had a relatively smooth trip down south and that you arrived safely. We miss you here in NY already. You left just in time, it's gotten nothing but colder since you left. Hope the transition to southern living goes well, and give my best to Yankee and Pup.

It is a fallacy that you can totally eliminate Palmetto bugs by using an exterminater.

No matter how clean or how new your house may be, you'll have them. You may not see them at all times but I guarentee they are there.

Palmetto bugs are not a sign of having a dirty house.

Now black mold is a vicious problem in the south.

Don't worry about the lizrds either Scarlett, they come with the territory and eat bugs- lizards are your friends! (and they can't be exterminated)

We have the cutest little geckos all over the place in Tampa. Little round suction-cup feet. Pretty pale green bodies. Thoughtful inquisitive eyes.

OK, I'm getting carried away.

So do we Tandoori Girl! Did you notice that they just started coming around a couple of years ago? The first one we saw was so tiny- about an inch long, now we see big 6 inch geckos! They are cute!

Where are you? Mine have been with me for years (Tampa). Maybe I have more of what they like -- roaches! I remember reading awhile back about the aggressive dark brown Cuban lizards that were starting to take over -- but we still have the generic ones.

Just don't feed the alligators. And don't leave your small animals outside or they might be gator food.

Tandoori Girl, I'm on the east coast, just north of Jupiter. I think it took them a while to migrate up this far... I understand that they are originally from further south.

We're usually the last to get anything in Florida. It's just great to know we got something before you -- even if it is only lizards.

This northener chiming in to say hello and welcome back to Scarlett. Ah, Lizards, reminds me of Provence. I fed one on our balcony there. They are very tiny and dart in and out of the stone walls.

This has been so much fun to read...all of the bug advice LOL Very helpful and informative!
I love my lizards They sun themselves on this window so I can just look up and there they are! A tiny tiny frog was in the kitchen the other morning..so sweet, I just picked it up and carried it out.
We are afraid to make a fire, the Chimney Sweep will do the honors of going into that chimney!
I know about Brown Recluse (UGH!) and the landscapers promise to be here tomorrow to clear away the mini jungle. Pup keeps to the grass, he's no dummy!
BB's was very good, we have eaten at the one on St Johns Ave and the one on Hendricks.
We had Thai food at Pom in San Marco. Unfortunately-I know Thai (NYC Thai) and this was not it, so I think we will mark that one off of our list.
mclaurie, they say it will get cold here, 50's LOL...today was so beautiful, a long sleeve tee shirt was all we needed for our Pup walk.
The Yankee is still ambivalent about this whole Southern thing, I am noticing his using the phrase ... " How ya doin" a lot...funny, he never said that in NY ~
I LOVE putting the flag UP on my mailbox and having the mailman pick up the mail

Welcome back, Ms. Scarlett! You are truly in your element now (sans bugs) down South. We have certainly missed both you and your witty posts.

Scarlett...:lol..."how ya doin". He's digging in his heels!! He won't become one of "them". That's too funny. Thanks for a giggle. The first time I heard a real "how ya doin" I did a double take, having read the phrase right here on Fodors first in some thread. It really comes out funny.

You know I got a hair massacre today. The gal who did the shampoo was, from all places, North Adams! And her Aunt and cousin live in Lee, and her Dad went to Williams and Mom to North Adams State Teachers College (it's changed names since). As long as I've been out of New England, we tend to cling to each other when we find each other out of our habitat.

I do love out little lizards. They are adorable. There is another variety that I've seen around Hilton Head...people call them skinks and they are huge. I don't know if your 6"ers are the same thing we have kkraczek--even with tip of tail I don' t think ours would make 6", normally.

I think I must need new contacts Scarlett...I read that you had Thai food at Porn, and as hard as I tried to blink that into clarity it still came out Porn. I knew that couldn't be--squinching up my eyes eventually got it right. Ya never can tell in this state of willy nilly zoning!

Welcome to Florida Scarlett!

I too enjoy reading your posts...Yankee just can't believe its' all true...repeating his favorite saying is his way of pinching himself.

One more word of advice...sorry to be the one to tell you, but leaving the flag up on your mailbox is an open invitation to identity theft. Bad guys can drive down the street just looking for those red flags, and inside are all kinds of personal info, checks, ss numbers...my brother the cop told me about this. Use the regular mailbox, or hand it to the postman directly.

Love those lizzies! Geckos are here about ten years now on Treasure Island...not many tho.

PS to OO: your mention of the p word came out underlined and in green bold! Betcha didn't think that would happen!! Sheesh! The wonders of modern popup/scam tech.

Olive Oyl, here is a link to a photo of the baby gecko that grew to be 6 inches. Is this the same type you have?

Scarlett, it's so good hearing from you again & glad to hear you're safe and sound in sunny Florida! My mother sends me the weather report daily from Naples, so I know you are not getting masses of snow like we are!

And I can't stop laughing...never thought your trip report would turn into a bug and creature report!! Who'd have thought moving to Florida would open such diverse topics of conversation???

(However! Add me to the list of those who think those little lizards are adorable and I think I'll refrain from saying what I think of those other things!)
