NYC to Freeport, NY.
 

I would like to travel to Freeport NY to attend a church concert (Paul Wibur @ Word of Life Church). I will be travelling from NYC (staying there for a few days).<BR><BR>What is the best route via the subway system, and how long would it take? The Church address is 80 W. Merrick Road, Freeport, N.Y. 11520.<BR><BR>Thanks! P.

Isn't Freeport near Rochester? That's about a five hour drive! I don't think the subway will take you there. Bus perhaps?<BR>

Take the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station to Freeport then a cab from the station to your destination. Make sure you get a phone number for the cab for your return to the station. Phil, Depending on what part of Merrick Road the church is located on, it may be walkable from station. It's been years since I've been back to my home town, but if I remember correctly, Main Street was the dividing line between East and West Merrick Rd. That being the case, the church is near the intersection. Exit the train station to your left, go to Main St and then make a right on Main. It's about a 5-10 minute walk to Merrick Rd.

P, I forget the subway line, but I think you would take the one to Hillside Ave, in Jamaica, and if still running, the bus (BeeLine?) to Freeport. That used to run along Merrick Road and the driver could tell you where to get off.

Phil, checking out the location on Mapquest, the previous poster is correct. If you are willing to walk, it is a short walk of just a few blocks. When you pull up the address in Mapquest, it shows the train line &amp; on the second to smallest level map you will see a dot/circle on the rail line that indicates the station.

Is anyone going to tell Phil that Freeport is not a great area, and it may not be the best idea to be walking around in an area you're not familar with, particularly at night.

Mr truth may have a point there if he still lives in Freeport. If so, a question, is the old FHS still standing?<BR>That was on Pine St between Grove and Church correct? I left in '51 and never looked back.<BR><BR>FHS class '51

do buses still operate between Jamaica and Freeport? How about to Hempstead?

Used to go to the midget car races at the Freeport stadium in the late 40s. Remember Al Duffy and Russ Klar were the favorites. Used to get the bus in Freeport to Jones Beach. <BR><BR><BR>

That old car racing stadium is now a BJ's Warehouse.<BR><BR>I live in Merrick, town next door. Take the LIRR from Penn Station. Babylon line. Get off at Freeport, it is the town after Baldwin. Walk 1 block south to Sunrise Highway. Can't miss it...6 lanes of traffic. (You will see a Blockbuster Video.) Cross Sunrise and walk 1 block further to Merrick Road. Make a right on to Merrick Rd. If I remember correctly, the church is in the old Grove Theatre, on the north side of Merrick Rd., across from a diner.

If the church is in the old Grove theater, a shorter walk would be Grove Street to Merrick Rd and then go left to the church.

Is Nunley's still open ??? My favorite place growing up !!!

Very sorry to say that Nunley's was closed down a few years ago. My fondess memories growing up on the Island in the 50s and 60s, were going to Nunley's with my grandparents. And then taking my small nephews decades later. Loved the ski-ball, the carousel, the tubs-of-fun, those little hand carts and even the creepy old fortune teller lady in her glass booth. She looked like Tony Perkins as Mother Bates in 'Psycho.' I believe the carousel was saved. Land is presently occupied by a Pep Boys...I think. Freeport High, next door, just added a huge extension. I am so old that I remember the large lake (great ice skating) that occupied the land way before the current high school was even built. It certainly was wonderful growing up on the Island 50 years ago.<BR><BR>

To Hmmmm.... Are you perhaps thinking Fairport, NY, near Rochester???

AJ, thanks for clarifying Nunleys. I had forgotten the name of it. We used to ride our bikes from the Seaman Ave./<BR>Babylon Tpke. area all the way to Nunleys, and that was in the early forties when I was about 9-11 years old.<BR>The games were fun and the fortune teller only told the truth. Used to ride the bike to Cassino pool also. Great place to grow up.<BR>
